Air Slovakia BHX-India

From 29th June 2003, Air Slovakia will commence operations from Birmingham International Airport (BIA) to Bratislava, offering the UK's first and only direct scheduled air link with Slovakia's capital city.
Air Slovakia will start with a summer schedule of four flights per week departing Birmingham every Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. It plans to operate a fleet of Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft from BIA to various onward international destinations, with its initial services connecting to Amritsar.
The Birmingham-Bratislavia-Amritsar service will provide an important historical link for the Punjabi community living in the UK, with the sacred Indian city deemed to be the centre of the Sikh faith and the site of its holiest shrine - The Golden Temple.
Mr Tibor Varga, Commercial Director, Air Slovakia, said, "This is an important step in the growth of our airline and part of a massive expansion programme which includes destinations in the North America, Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and the Indian subcontinent. We are delighted to be able to offer passengers flying from Birmingham International Airport a first-class service and flying experience which we pride ourselves on so much". Brian Summers, Managing Director, BIA, said, "We are thrilled that Air Slovakia have chosen to launch their first UK service to Bratislava out of Birmingham. This new route is another exciting addition to our expanding network and will provide even more choice for travellers in the Midlands and beyond. The opportunity to travel onwards to Amritsar will be welcomed by many and is further confirmation that we are the Midland's gateway to the Indian subcontinent".
Air Slovakia's first aircraft, bearing the name, 'The City of the Golden Temple', will feature 12 first class seats and 188 economy class seats. Special introductory fares have been made available, starting at £299.

If so many airlines are advertising the benefits of ''new service from BHX with onward connections to XXX'' (insert indian city) why on earth arent air india getting their foot in the door???? A direct flight would surely see off all the competitors???

BHX runway is 8,500 ft, no problem to India, PIA operate A310'S direct as do Emirates with A330 & B772.
American operated B763'S to Chicago direct for many years.

Think you might find the ASA's between the two don't allow much on the scheduled service side.
Thus, Air Slovakia with fifth rights are able to make the stop linking the two.

Thats what I love about this forum, Its funny how PIA itself quite regularly operates B747 into BHX airbusses when not all direct pakistan, so im sure Air India could if it desired. Me thinks the usual londen polotics has once again ensured there own survival by making everone else suffer. Lets face it LHR is a dump, and LGW is such a pain in the rear to get to Im sure most of london would find BHX a more suitable option with the M25 to negotiate. O but then i suppose its Wembly all over again even though 80% of the country wanted it in the Midlands. When will they learn london is to most of us the armpit of the world and we only go there because we have too when will the suppresion of the rest of the country end!!!!

Does anyone know if :
A/ They have signed an aircraft lease?
B/ Why is it not on their website?
C/ Are they funding the whole thing?
D/ Do they have the ASA/rights into India ?
All seams a bit strange to me!
Sorry to be negative but it looks as if these guys have not expanded for years !

The fact that Air Slovakia have done nothing much for years is no guide to the future. It's a whole new world now in eastern Europe. This is a time of exceptional opportunity for any state that has an advantageous geographical position, ethnic traffic flows that can be captured on a sixth-freedom basis, and cheap planes.
In terms of credibility, I'd rate it 90%. BIA have heard too much flannel to give it their endorsement without a very high level of confidence. My guess is that it'll happen.

Well I heard that the press lauch flight was a one off chartered Air Holland B763 with an Air Slovakia sticker on one side only....
Furthermore it turned up at Brum 9 hours late and the press were begged to stay. The fact that no aircraft have been signed by Air Slovakia and no tickets have been sold as of today in the marketplace added together with no operating permit from The India DGCA and a question mark over the ASA/traffic rights plus the fact that Air Slovakia are putting no money into the project only receiving a royalty payment for exposure of the 5th freedom rights all seems a liitle funny!
I hope this goes ahead as its good news from BHX but I cant see them up and running for June 29th especially if they have to sign B757' get them registered, train crews and all the rest!
