Ryanair at Prestwick
There was mention last year of a Ryanair maintenance facility being built at Prestwick. So far there is no sign of it. Anyone with any info?
Funding difficulties maybe?

Ryanair Building
Surely theres no problem with finances, in the first few weeks at NCL ryanair bookings soared! It cant be a finance problem maybe they`re delaying production until they think the building is needed????? Mystery!
Came through there only yesterday (Thursday 24/4) and the PIK "freesheet" newspaper was describing the facility. If I recall the story correctly (because I didn't bring it with me) it will open in 2004 and employ a couple of hundred people.

21 737-200s to be precise and likely to be phased out by 2005. 2 are PIK based (will be 3 within 2 weeks to support new Gerona service). New MRO facility should help PIK get the 732s replaced by 738s quite soon or so they hope.

Is there any talk at all of a Ryanair service to Italy from Prestwick? With such a sizeable Italian community in Glasgow there has to be an opportunity there to carve out a market? Any takers, do you think?

Seemed odd to me that PIK didn't get a route to Bergamo when that base was opened - it's a long sector but nevertheless, as you point out, there's strong Italian - Scottish potential.
flyglobespan.com operate Rome (CIA) - PIK 2 x week and carry good numbers of Italians I understand.

GroupCaptain, Thank you for the your very interesting update about Flyglobespan.com. You live and learn something new everyday! Sparkymarky, I was thinking the same too about hopeful success on the new Gerona service creating a good atmostphere for a possible Italian destination later from Ryanair.

Prestwick - Gerona is selling well according to what I'm told. Hardly surprising at the fares on offer. Many deferred buying their summer holiday due to the Iraq conflict. I'm sure the Gerona service will get some folks who are now buying their main holiday.

Services to Italy
The manager of GLA claimed recently that Volare were considering a GLA-Milan service. Probably hot air as usual, but if such a service were to start FR would probably announce a PIK-Bergamo service within a few days!
