Extra police needed for Luton Airport patrols

Security has increased at Luton Airport
Bedfordshire Police have found themselves short of 60 officers to deal with the extra security patrols around Luton Airport.
On Friday, it was revealed that Northamptonshire Police Authority has been asked to help the depleted Bedfordshire force cope with the increased threat of terrorist attacks.

Bedfordshire Police have been told to provide a 24-hour dedicated armed and unarmed team to patrol the airport.

But the shortage of officers means colleagues in neighbouring counties are being drafted in.

Extra officers

Northamptonshire Police has been asked if it can supply up to 10 unarmed officers for at least three months to look after airport staff and visitors.

The costs would be paid by Bedfordshire Police.

Officers will be asked to volunteer for the posts.

It is hoped that Bedfordshire will be able to find enough staff to cope on its own within six months.
