Post ...or the Beeb

From the BBC(19/12):

"The low-cost airline easyJet is to fly to six destinations from Newcastle Airport. There will be daily flights to Alicante, Barcelona, Prague and Paris, and flights twice a day to Belfast and Bristol, the company said on Wednesday. The services to Alicante, Barcelona and Belfast will begin in March 2003, with the other beginning five months later.

About 100 new jobs will be created and that figure could increase as further destinations are introduced in 2004.

Bookings for the new routes open on Friday morning and prices start from £12.50.

Newcastle Airport is preparing to look after an additional 750,000 customers in the first 12 months of easyJet's operation. Newcastle Airport's chief executive John Parkin, said: "This announcement is fantastic news for the region, opening up new and exciting destinations in Europe at low fares for the first time.

"This is the first step in a very important stage of the airport's development and we can expect another range of exciting destinations to be announced for 2004."

Newcastle Airport will become easyJet's fourth regional base in the UK with two aircraft to be based at the airport from the end of March, three from August, rising to at least four aircraft in 2004.

Mike Collier, chief executive of development agency One NorthEast said: "Good transport links have an integral part to play in furthering the region's economic growth.

"Improved accessibility, will assist in developing our leisure and tourism industries making the region a more attractive and affordable place to visit. "

David Magliano, easyJet sales and marketing director said: "There is massive demand for low cost flights in the North East.

"As well as offering new weekend break and holiday destinations, the new routes will bring European tourists to the North East and boost local business."

Before we start celebrating lets keep our feet on the ground here, so to speak. Low-cost is good news BUT not necessarily for the other airlines operating through NCL. FlyBE already fly the CDG route for AFR - I can't see them flying as many rotations on the CDG route once EZY arrive. FlyBE also fly the NCL-BHD route - they're bound to lose out to EZY's BFS route. And in the future who's to say that EZY won't start up an AMS route in competition with KLM? KLM may keep their connections but they'd lose the point to point passengers. It's not ALL rosy for everybody! On the up side there's always been a big market in the North-East for low-cost travel - this was proved when Go started the STN route - and EZY will certainly be a big hit up north.

But look at other airports such as Bristol, where FlyBe and Go compete on the Belfast routes there pretty successfully? Also, no-frills airlines, at other airports, have prooved they expand the market to the destinations in most cases, not take over completly. However, we shall see. The £22.50 prices to BCN look good enough to buy though May just have to take up on that.

You can get EZY fares between NCL and BHD for as little as £1 each way plus taxes, how can Flybe. compete with that? I think Flybe. will reduce frequencies. As for AF, i'm not sure, the CDG service is only planned to be one per day til at least 2004, and that one per day is in the afternoon, meaning the business/AF market is pretty safe for the next 18 months.
