Post London airport expansion - quickfire vote please!

Hi all

Just to satisfy my curiosity, which of the following (pick one or a combination) is the best bet?

1. LHR short runway
2. LHR long runway
3. LGW 1 runway
4. Cliffe in all its glory
5. LTN 2nd/extended runway
6. STN 1 runway
7. STN 2 runways
8. STN 3 runways
9. None of the above
10. All of the above
11. Southend, Manston etc
12. An ingenuous alternative solution

I have an idea for no. 12 but I'm not telling! Otherwise methinks no's 3, 5 and 6 should do ok for the timebeing and a lot of work on regional airports.

I'll keep a tally, will post results back next week.

Cheers

Expansion

As someone who has spent there life for the last 30 years at LHR and a couple of years in the 70's at STN. I have to say that they all merit proper consideration. I have spent a considerable time performing airport audits in the UK and overseas for 20 of those years and have witnessed first hand considered deveolment at AMS, CDG & BRU. It is also of merit to have witnessed the changes at SOU, JER and the scottish airports to mention a few.

I have grave reservations about LHR/LGW because what ever happens they do not have the external infrastructure to service passengers onward travel needs. At present they are dumps and this has been so for many decades with grandiose plans that amount to no more than tacking on more lounges, but really more shops.

If the UK is and wants to retain its avaition superiority then it must look at the regionals/new to furnish much of the extra capacity. If LHR is to be the prefered location then we will continue faster down the slope that I fear we are already on. Those of you old enough will remember all the 60-70 hot air about Maplin, Thurleigh and Filton.

Of these choices, we need 2, 3 AND 6.

The pedant in me cannot help pointing out that if you choose 10 ("All of the above"), you have by definition included 9 ("None of the above").

You may be right that we do need all three (LGW/LHR/STN) but can SW London really cope with any further LHR expansion - how would people get to the airport - fly in from LGW, Luton and Stansted I guess?

As someone who regularly travels thru LHR, and is fed up waiting in holding patterns I'll vote for 1 and 2.
