BA - Officially the 'Fastest Airline in the West

As published by ABTN

Nice to see that there is justice in the world!!

Quote:

British Airways is now officially “the fastest airline in the West!”

All right. The West Midlands!

Its all thanks to no-frills carrier MyTravelLite’s most recent
publicity stunt – the “Great Airline Race to Paris”.

It seems that those cheeky chappies at the former Airtours spin-off
invited three journalists to race from Birmingham International
Airport to the Arc de Triomphe, flying to Beauvais Airport with
MyTravelLite, and Charles de Gaulle Airport with British Airways and
Air France. Each journalist had to check-in a bag at Birmingham and,
once in Paris, they were not allowed to seek assistance other than to
ask directions, and were only allowed to use public transport.

Presumably the idea was to prove that it is quicker to travel to the
centre of Paris from a small airport, even if it is 50 miles from the
Champs Elysee.

MyTravelLite were very confident of winning the race - perhaps because
they hadn’t told either British Airways or Air France about it!

Plans were laid. The previous day managing director Tim Jeans, two
press officers and two cabin crew, together with specially printed
banners, and posters positioned out to Paris. A photo-call was
arranged to snap the winner crossing the finishing line.

Sadly for MyTravelLite the first person to the Etoile turned out to be
the British Airways passenger. He reckoned it was cheaper too!

Marks out of ten as a PR stunt, Zero! It’s a good job Tim has left
Michael O’Leary.

Unquote.

How horribly embarassing for MYTL

You have to be certain of winning these sort of things before organising the PR posters etc...

I was fascinated when I followed the MYT in to Beavais on box 2.
CDG was on LVP's, there was mist and low cloud. I should imagine the MYT only just made it on a non precision approach to 13.

From the MyTravelLite press release about this on their website:

1st Place BA 3 hrs 3 mins £364.70

2nd Place MyTravelLite 3 hrs 14 mins £24.46

3rd Place Air France 3 hrs 44 mins £355.10

So how did the BA traveller reckon it was cheaper? Maybe here's an answer.

I have just priced up comparable trips for next Tuesday 3 December, for an evening in Paris travelling from Birmingham, on the BA and MyTravel websites. MyTravel have quoted £77.25. BA have quoted £78.60. You may like to compare those fares with what MyTravel describe above ! Oh, and how much more does it cost to get in from Beauvais to Paris?

Smile

May I also add that on the BA flight you would get a sandwich, hot beverage, and/or G&T..etc quarter bottle of wine for that fare. Not much, but on MYT add another fiver for a snack and a drink.

I blame the journalists, what is it about these people. You fix something up for them and they just throw it back in your face. Why can't they get proper jobs and stop tarting about Europe diluting yields and generally bringing airlines to their knees. If they're not running stupid tests of airport security they're off wrecking everybody's best efforts to run a marketing campaign. They should have to carry media cards whenever they board aircraft so that they can be watched.

Orange one:

Since when did EZY fly from BHX?

Would have liked to see the travel time for the mythical pax today when BVS was R0200/0200/0200. Ok, you'd get in - but how long would the subsequent 40km coach ride take?

Hang on, don't BA fly RJ100s from Brum to Paris now? If so, then MYT would have had the advantage and they still didnt manage to get there first!

I can only assume this is meant to be ironic.
