A new low-cost, twice daily service is to be launched in December between Bournemouth & Prestwick by Palmair European using B737's. Perhaps this is part of what you missed ?

Apparently Buzz is moving in with up to eight flights a day. Usual puff from the airport about expansion, also usual agony from locals about noise. Given recent job losses in the area, I would have thought that the anti aviation brigade would have been a little more realistic.

Good times for Bournemouth.
Buzz are to base 2 B733 for the start of their summer schedule, 30th March 2003 and will fly to 8 destinations, 7 days a week. Apparently there will be a few surprises in the routes.
Palmair are to start a low cost, but not no-frills, service to Prestwick from December. The route will be twice daily mon-fri and once a day at weekends. They will add a new route shortly after new years followed by a couple more routes from Spring/Early summer 2003.
Ryanair apparently are ok with this, as they will be concentrating on linking Bournemouth to their European hubs.
There are other rumours around, some from very reliable sources of further expansion.
Bournemouth should handle around 1.3 million PAX in 2003, compare that to 266,638 in 2001 when Manchester PLC first took it over. Thats a business strategy!

They have recently had the expansion of the terminal passed through the local planning procedures. This and flight expansion are not too complicated as both the immediate surrounds and the approach areas are sparsely populated (though I now live under the approach for 26). The only negative is that it will finally close 17/35 permanently (has had 747s parked on it for many months anyway) limiting to a single strip of tarmac.
Next thing is we need decent road and rail links to the North and West to take advantage of this facility. Unlikely in these times of "joined-up" policy

Can confirm that Buzz will launch services from Bournemouth with two 737-300s in March. Apparently Hurn fought off stiff competition for many other airports from around the UK to become Buzz's second hub. No news as to what the routes are to be, but likely a mix of business/holiday destinations.
The two 737-300 will be in addition to the Stansted based fleet, which see's replacement of the BAE 146 over the winter with 6 737-300's, making the Bournemouth aircraf the first increase in the size of the Buzz fleet since the airline' inauguration.
Rumours are off a further UK hub and a European hub to follow by the end of 2003.

CANADA Perhaps from a well know Canadian charter outfit - (well the grapevine was correct back in May when i posted about BUZZ coming to BOH).

I was at Bournemouth last week and noted that the terminal has just 6 or 8 check-in desks that allowed for a queue of around 10 deep without stepping outside or snaking around the terminal. The long term car park was a lake with cars marooned in the middle and public transport was virtually non-existent. With just one Ryanair 737-200 and a Spanish Airbus leaving within an hour of each other the terminal was full. Interesting times ahead for passengers.

You are quite right LTNman - interesting times ahead........The new terminal has planning permission already, but with the announcements of recent days even the size of the new terminal will probably not be adequate to cope with the future demand....Rumour has it that we will soon see some activity
on that front.
As for the current terminal.........well whoever designed it needs shooting...it's totally impractical...(and it was with pax numbers in the 80's)...you mentioned the check in area...thats a farce...the waterlogged car park is the same but it all comes down to money i suppose.
The current terminal was never actually completed in full.........there were other stages of the project which collapsed due lack of funding many years ago....i.e. new arrival and departure areas....What you currently have is a mid 80's structure attached to pre-war buildings....not brilliant, but it has managed ,JUST, up until now.
With all said and done Bournemouth has great potential and if that potential is managed correctly then i'm sure with a new terminal and better public transport links you will soon see the airport rising above a few better known ones...PS BOH is currently the fastest expanding airport in the UK according to CAA stats and long may it continue..Good luck to them.

BOH airport will begin expanding the arrivals and departures shortly. There will also be an increase in the number of check-in desks. As to the new terminal, well its designed to handle 1.25million PAX per year and if started won't be finished until 2004. The total PAX through put for BOH in 2003 will be around 1.1million so my thinking is that they will have to re-apply whilst expanding whats already there. Eventually though BOH will have a lovely, shiny, brand spanking new terminal. Lets just hope they build the access road off the dual-carriageway.

A regular service to New York would be fantastic and one that could possibly be sustained using a smaller aircraft than a 747-200 ( maybe a 757 on a weekly basis).
Don't think theres going to be too many more 747-200 movements into/out of BIA if the rumours about EAL are correct.

You may very well see a Palmair low cost service to Mahon at some point. Palma, Mallorca is rumoured as the first european destination to be launched sometime after New Year with others to follow. My guess would be Alicante and Malaga as both these destinations are very popular from BOH (second homes/apartments etc).
Chiglet, maybe this is an interim measure until the new terminal is built. Expansion of the current facilities will be occuring soon and seeing as BOH only has 1 luggage belt, anything would be better than the present situation. Its already really bad with just 3 flights in. Can't wait to see it with 6 or more next summer!

I assume that this extra Palmair business in in addition to the comprehensive series of charter flights to the mentioned destinations, that they, Bath Travel, have been developing for years out of Hurn?
Otherwise, they could be seen as an imposter!

The 1st aircraft to operate under low cost service will after New year be flying BOH-PIK-BOH, BOH-PALMA-BOH, BOH-PIK-BOH. each weekday with only 1 PIK service on saturday and sunday.
There should be an announcement and website in the next week or so.
