Virgin Express lines up rapid response at Koln-Bonn

Virgin Express has advised Lufthansa’s German Wings and TUI’s Hapag-Lloyd Express that it is ready to ‘react quickly’ as the three low-cost carriers square up to each other at Koln-Bonn airport in Germany.
In its Q2s issued today, Virgin Express said; ‘These large companies are intent solely on protecting their base businesses and we intend to monitor their activities very carefully.’ A spokesperson explained that this referred to pricing and routes. ‘These airlines have only just been founded, and their flying programme is a bit hazy. We are making sure that we are in a position to react quickly when their plans are more concrete.’
Virgin Express is dropping its Heathrow service at the end of October as a result of SN Brussels Airlines selling its slots. When asked about plans to reintroduce the UK to its network, the spokesperson said that Virgin Express was constantly monitoring and talking to airports around Europe but that the UK wasn’t part of its plans ‘for the winter season at least.’
The Q2s show a profit of €2.9m (£1.85m), 33% higher than the same period last year. Last year 40% of Virgin Express’ seats were contracted to Sabena. When the carrier went bankrupt post-11, this capacity was made available for Virgin Express to sell to the public itself. A contract with SN Brussels expires in March 2003 which currently accounts for 15% of revenues.
The Q2s are available on Virgin Express’ corporate PR’s web site.
