Airlines and Revenue - avenues for growth / expansion?

Am interested in what idea's people have to offer on how airlines can increase their revenue by expanding into new but related fields.

For instance, I have read that some airlines tried to diversify and buy into hotels (United/SAS) but that didn't work out too well.

Other idea's I've heard is Airlines starting their own flight training schools - seems like a good idea - wonder why it hasn't happened on a large scale like Flight Safety. After all they are quite profitable.

I don't think the industry as a whole can afford to look at new ventures in the current climate.

Having been one of those to suffer through last years events, I think many carriers are struggling to keep the heads above the water.

The one aspect that I keep wondering why more airlines don't expoilt is self handling, and the setting up of handling agents related to their group/franchise.

It would be nice to try if things if the dosh was available, but at the moment it just simply isn't.
