Qantas Faces More Indus Action, 6,000 Staff To Strike Monday

SYDNEY -(Dow Jones)- Qantas Airways Ltd. (Australia:QAN.AX - News) is set to be hit by industrial action for the second time this month after 6,000 employees, or 20% of its 30,000-strong workforce, agreed Thursday to strike for 24 hours next week over job security.

According to the strike organizer, the Australian Services Union, the industrial action Monday will involve: check-in, telephone sales, freight, information technology, load control, catering, operations, administration and finance, engineering and maintenance, Qantas Holidays and Business Travel staff.

"It is regrettable that some delays will incur, but the ball is firmly in Qantas' court. This could have been avoided if Qantas was prepared to offer job security commitments," ASU Assistant National Secretary Linda White said in a statement.

"Qantas is posting record profits but won't guarantee job security," she added.

The ASU says job security has emerged as a key sticking point in negotiations with Qantas for a new workplace agreement.

Meanwhile, Qantas said all international flights will operate as scheduled Monday although some delays are expected. International passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their flight is scheduled to leave.

Delays also are expected to some domestic flights, while others will be rescheduled or canceled. Regional passengers have been advised to arrive at least 90 minutes before their flight.

The strike news came after the close of trade Thursday. Qantas shares fell 4 cents, or 0.9%, to A$4.63.

Air travel in Australia also was disrupted Aug. 2 by a national 12-hour strike by around 6,000 Qantas workers.

The ASU called that strike to protest Qantas' offer of a 3% pay rise for each of the next two years. Unionized staff have been seeking 5% pay increases for 2002-03 and 2003-04.

Please get the spelling right......QANTAS! Gets the Diggers hopping mad. Then they start making sarcastic comments about English cricket. Then somebody says something rude about Fosters or 4X, then they start going on about warm beer, and before you know it there is ANOTHER virtual brawl. Just spell it right OK?
