UK APD Abolished?

Chancellor's pre-budget statement today.
Children under 12 APD abolished from next April. Under 16s from following year.
Some small print with that I think is economy class only.
It's a start.

Best they don't abolish it all together. They may find more people flying and find that they need to build some extra runways at LHR/LGW.

Since we're on the topic of APD, I took the chance [during tea-break at 'Runways UK'] to ask the CEO of Edinburgh Airport about the intentions of the Scottish Parliament concerning this tax.

APD is currently worth GBP150M per annum to Scotland (before the changes announced in today's Autumn Statement). The intention north of the border is to reduce APD rates by 50% as soon as practicable when control of the tax switches to Scotland. This will cost GBP75M per annum. There remains a longer-term ambition to abolish APD in Scotland completely at some point in the future.

On other topics relating to Scotland, frustration was expressed regarding the continuing taxpayer support for Prestwick Airport (around GBP25M per annum).

In the course of the main event, reference was also made to the Dundee-London PSO not making sense with the subsidy required representing around GBP250 per passenger (an exact figure was quoted but I didn't write it down quickly enough).

For those interested, delegates were advised that comprehensive video footage of the 'Runways UK' event (related to the Davies Commission) will be posted online over the next few days.

Are those ticketing dates, or travel dates? It does make a difference..

Not sure why this got moved to airlines, airports and routes. SLF would have been a better choice.

The effective dates are travel dates. And the first change is from May 1st 2015, not April.

1st May? Wonder how many parents will defer holidays at Easter until after this date? Could seriously alter the plans for a lot of airlines.

Would be a good idea. Osborne appears to be chipping away at APD, last year zones 3 and 4 were scrapped, next it's under 12s, then under 16s.

Best get rid of it, devolving will only make things a whole lot more complicated.

It's for children travelling in Economy Class, not in Premium Y, Business or First.

Probably a good thing ...

The largess of the Scots with English money is admirable

No tuition fees, no prescription charges no APD what a paradise it must be.

So next time I look at my annual tax bill I'll get a warm feeling of how much good it is doing in Scotland.

According to the BBC business presenter this morning ,he claims the axing of child APD will save a family of 4 just £26.00 .

Im assuming this would be for short haul.

So don't know how much it will save long haul.

Every tiny bit helps perhaps.

I have long felt that this tax was factored the wrong way round, if for whatever reason your flying long haul it stands to reason that you'll either cough up if you can or not travel, this has reduced demand rom regional airports and resulted in more route consolidation from the already busy airports in the SE.

As and when Scotland get control over APD and reduces or scraps the tax, then it will be interesting to see what if any stimulation it has on traffic and route growth.

The one question i have is that would i be correct in assuming that if you started your flight in say EDI and booked through tickets with BA through LHR you would avoid APD?

I'm looking at going to JFK in the new year and trying the Norwegian dreamliner, by mistake i selected Oslo as departure point, the tax & charges were £32 compared with £104 from LGW the base price from Oslo was also far cheaper, funny old world

May I on behalf of my fellow Scots thank our partners in the UK for their generosity.

Funnily enough, 45% of scots voters did not see it that way......

Neither did I Frank.. I was jesting.. I think there was a lot of panic over the result of just one poll. I and many of my friends were old and intelligent enough
to see just how calamitous separation would have been. All those little perks/bribes given at the expense of Scotland's infrastructure would be unsustainable if the SNP had to fund them independent of the UK block grant.

In fact if it had/were to come to pass there would be a mass exodus South.

APD? The SG had tax raising powers they never used - they didn't want the masses seeing them raise taxes - only nasty Westminster does such things.
