Continental @ LTN?
From BBC East Ceefax:
TRANSATLANTIC APPROACH MADE BY AIRPORT
Luton Airport has approached
Continental Airlines with a proposal
to begin flights between Luton and New
York, a newspaper report says.
The move if successful would mean the
first scheduled transatlantic service
from the Bedfordshire airport.
The proposal, outlined in The Guardian,
comes as the Houston-based airline
considers whether to reinstate more
flights to the south-east of England.
Luton airport is owned by the aviation
group TBI PLC.

Continental have their 757's go through D checks at Monarch Engineering on a regular basis.
LTN has far easier access to London and has its own catchment area for travellers to NYC and beyond.
I'm not biased of course!!

Luton makes transatlantic approach

Luton Airport has approached Continental Airlines with a proposal for the American carrier to begin regular flights between Luton and New York, in a plan which would mean the first scheduled transatlantic service from the Bedfordshire airport.
The airport, which is owned by the aviation group TBI, also wants Thameslink to rename certain rail services from London as the "Luton Express" in return for a contribution towards marketing.
The ambitious proposals are part of Luton's efforts to be taken seriously as an international hub in advance of the publication of the government's strategy for airport capacity in south-east England, due in June.
Continental already flies to Newark airport from Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow. The airline introduced a daily service from Stansted in May last year but the route was suspended following September 11.
Luton's proposal comes as the Houston-based airline considers whether to reinstate more flights to the south-east of England.
A Continental spokesman confirmed that the airline had received an approach from Luton but added that there were no "active discussions" about the idea.

I'll bet they would return to STN before they ever considered Luton. The STN services were 'suspended ufn' last year before enough time had passed to truly see if they were viable or not.
They were 'suspended' due to CO internal politics (& 11/9), not because they werent viable. In fact there were many instances of oversales not travelling due to demand.
Whether a company can regain any loyalty after such a short service is another question!

Questions:
Can a 757 operate direct LTN-JFK with any reasonable payload??
Can LTN cope with this potential extra business? Surely the runway is getting to capacity.
Is this a PR stunt ?

235 up to Bangor Maine, there will be far fewer on a COA 757.
Monarch once proposed using their longer range 75's to New York and Boston from Luton in 1989 on seat only charters. It never actually happened though.
Believe it when it happens!
