Lufthansa could buy BMI?
Hi,
at first: I'm not a pilot, i work as an aircraft engineer for LH Technik in Frankfurt, but i hope you won't kill me for posting here I think you could be interested in this:
There were several rumours about LH and BMI in the past, but now it seems like it's serious.
I have contacts to some executives at LHT, and one told me today, that LH is in serious talks with BMI about buying the whole BMI mainline. BMIBaby would continue to operate independent, but with strong connections to the Star Alliance (so they won't start a pricewar with Star members for example).
With a possible opening of LHR->USA for other than the 4 current airlines, LH wants to expand BMI at LHR.
What do you think about this (any BMI pilots here?), would you like or dislike flying for Lufthansa? (Actually, BMI would continue as a own brand, maybe something like BMI Lufthansa, but my Colleague didn't know anything about possibilities yet)
ByeBye
Jochen

Jochen,my dear fellow,
bmi have proved they can't cut the mustard once they get west of Shannon,so pehaps the sooner Lufthansa buy 'em&scrap'em,the better it will be for the real N.Atlantic players.A mere irritation, old chap.

.
And just what do you base your (obviously) well informed
facts on bmi not "cutting the mustard"???
.
From where I'm sat...I can only see the figures going up and up
and with an excellent punctuality record, not too much wrong there, methinks...!
Stick to whatever you're good at, boy and leave the talking to the grown-ups !

Only one of the 3 bmi A330s is stored at Manchester, the one in the Star Alliance livery.
The other two (in bmi livery) operate the daily trans-atlantic runs to Chicago and Washington.

Loads are good (always 70%+) and still rising, and customer feedback on service and punctuality has been almost exclusively very favourable.
The story with the 3rd ship is that it was on lease to SAS, who declared it surplus to requirements (post 11/9/01). It has been used sporadically on the US routes, but has otherwise remained in storage.
Bmi have been actively trying to lease out ships no3 and no4 (still with the manufacturers), giving rise to rumours that they were about to give up on the US routes from MAN - apparently some folk didn't realise that there were 4 A330s, not 2, and jumped to mistaken conclusions.
The next step seems to be opening up long-haul routes from LHR, but it's anyone's guess when this will happen.
edited 6/5/02 by Caslance to remove evidence of Stella-induced Sunday Senility. :-)

To get back on topic, I think most bmi pilots would welcome ownership by LH. They would inject some management skills, which are almost entirely lacking at the moment, and rumour has it that they actually RESPECT pilots rather than hating them!

Caslance - one small correction. SAS decided to return G-WWBD after 09/11, not before as they trimmed back like most other airlines.
I agree that it's possible that LH might look at a takeover but look at the example of Britannia. TUI purchased them, painted their aircraft in their own colours and removing the very British identity and as far as I know are gradually moving their operation HQ to Germany. I personally would like to see bmi retain it's British identity but I agree the running of the company needs to be improved.

You're quite right, Electric Sky. Got my "pre" and "post" mixed up! I've edited it now.
The old brain doesn't do Sundays very well these days.

WHY AND HOW?
Interesting,
I think if Luftansa were to buy out bmi there would be advantages for bmi but I have a couple of questions:
1) Why would Luftansa bother, they have a stake in bmi already & bmi are part of the Star Alliance which already governs the most part of its route structure.
What gains would Luftansa have to make out of what would be a v.large investment when they have most of the pro's already?
2) bmi have major problems in trying to get out of LHR with long haul . One would think that bearing that in mind you could hardly see the UK gov. letting Luftansa to own the second greatest number of slots out of LHR. It would be very interesting to see if the mergers and aqusitions would even contimplate that!
I think that it would be more than a thorn in the side of BA or Virgin if bmi went out of LHR considering it's just over a quater of the price for business class and by most pax comments a far superior service! If it was not a problem why block it!
