New Plan Alitalia 2013-16
peppo - you're presumably much more familiar with Alitalia so I hope you can help.
The slides seems to suggest that the combined Alitalia group will end up with lots of small bases dotted around Italy flying 150-seat aircraft, but there will also be a hub in Rome and a sort of semi-hub in Milan and there will be an expanstion of long haul routes. From my limited understanding, it seems to say that Alitalia will be trying to serve lots of different people in different ways, without any obvious kind of focus.
Could someone knowledgeable perhaps let us know your thoughts and maybe talk a bit about what you think this business plan really means ?
Furthermore, what does Alitalia mean when they talk about a "smart carrier" ? Is this some kind of low-cost short-haul airline like IAG's Vueling ?

Speaking very clearly in the Italian forum, everyone thought it was a bit 'far-fetched plan The intentions are right .. but we will see how they will be implemented.
The new AirOne should be modeled on Germanwings .. Just look at how it's going AirOne, a failure on all sides .. The long range is developed with no real criterion .. trying more and more to weaken Malpensa in favor of Linate ..
As for the planes of Air One would be 180 seats ..
Among other things, all of these new routes are all "in project", then it already does understand what they are aware of their choices..

Btw. Is the new (old-new) Alitalia already profitable?

Looks like some McKinsey nerds are being well paid for hatching this plan. They did the same for Swissair a few years back before their bankruptcy in mid 2000s. Consultants always have the answers pre and post bankruptcy...
Alitalia needs a total REFRESH because the brand is still a bit negative in many consumers eyes. No surprise about focusing more on international because Ryanair and EasyJet are thrashing Alitalia within Europe.

Don't worry there last reorganisation was to close its profitable Milan hub and expand its loss making Rome hub..... This is better than a back of the fag packet exercise.
How's the Patient?
I'm planning an Italian trip this summer that requires two sectors with Alitalia. My last euro excursion involved MALEV and I'm concerned my choice of carrier for this trip may be beginning to show a trend.
Are there any doctors out there who can give an up to date prognosis on Alitalia's prospects?

Think very carefully as to how exactly you book. In the event of Alitalia going bust, before you leave home, would you rather get the money back from your credit card firm, or do you really need to make the trip ? If Alitalia go bust whlie you're away, could you put up with a 24 hour delay before you find a seat on another airline to get home ?
If booking via a travel agent, phone up anonymously, and ask about scheduled airline failure insurance. If the agent offers this insurance, read the terms very carefully.
If booking direct with the airline, do it on a credit card, not a debit card.
If booking more than 2 or 3 months in advance, think whether you really need to book on Alitalia, or whether another airline for a slightly higher price or slightly less convenient flight time might be suitable. Be creative when looking for alternative flight options.

Thank you Doctor(s)
I will be travelling in June with the international sectors covered by BA. The domestic sectors I need to cover are Catania - Florence via Rome. Alitalia offer a through ticket with a change of aircraft in Rome, however given the circumstances, I am willing to take other options. I've looked around and the only alternative I can see is with Meridiana at an ungodly hour.
Any second opinions would be welcome.
Thanks Akro

Do you need to stop over at Rome? Vueling have at least one daily direct flight between Catania (CTA) and Florence (FLR) and an Optima one way ticket you can get from €55.
