New shock for Glasgow Airport

By Deborah Anderson

GLASGOW Airport is trailing its Edinburgh rival once again after it handled fewer passengers for a
second month in a row.

It is the first time that Scotland's largest airport has fallen behind Edinburgh in two successive months and there is now renewed backing for the Evening Times campaign for a dedicated airport raillink to attract passengers from all over Scotland.

In February Edinburgh saw passenger figures rise 21.9% to 561,300 compared with last year, while
Glasgow rose 7.9% to 535,500, according to the British Airports Authority.

The previous month Edinburgh saw passenger numbers increase by 19.1% year on year to more than 470,000, while Glasgow improved by just 6.4% to 440,000, according to the British Airports Authority.

The increase is put down to the fact there are more scheduled flights from Edinburgh, while Glasgow increasingly relies on charter services for its passenger numbers and will recover business this summer.

A spokesman for the Scottish Airports Authority said Glasgow still remained the number one airport and said month on month figures were not a true reflection on its performance.

He said: "The monthly increase can be put down the fact that Edinburgh hosted two international rugby
matches with 40 extra flights being put on from France and Ireland. It gives a false impression that Glasgow is falling behind when it is not."

Duncan Tannahill, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, although surprised by the increase in traffic through Edinburgh, said that he did not believe that it was doom and gloom for Glasgow, but thinks now is time to go ahead with the airport rail link.

Mr Tannahill said: " We are anxious to see that built sooner rather than later to ensure that people have access to the airport from all over Scotland.

"The only way Glasgow will hold on to its carriers is if they can build a market and that means people being able to get to the airport."

The British Airports Authority figures published today showed a further improvement in the number of people flying post-September 11.

The group, which operates seven UK airports including Edinburgh, Glasgow Heathrow and Gatwick, reported a second consecutive month of increased passenger numbers in March.

During the month, it handled 10.1 million passengers - 3.4% higher than the same month the previous year and up from February's figure of 8.2 million.

The increase marks the second consecutive month that numbers have risen since the terrorist attacks on the United States.

Joe,

Why do you get off on the fact edi is doing better than glasgow, can't you just be happy with the fact that they are doing well????

Looks like I need to start explaining myself again, the reason edinburgh has more passengers going through is because (a) they're are more low-cost airlines operating than gla and operate more flights than gla (b) at the end of summer and due Sep 11 glasgow lost a lot of scheduled flights let me namde just some of them :

Air Canada Daily 767-200
American Airlines Daily 767-200
Continental reduced capacity from DC10 to Boeing 757-200
Air France Embraer 145 Daily
Sabena BAe 146 5 x times daily
Also all the charter flights, now that is a heck of a lot of travelling passengers.

Now edi's figures are good and glasgow figures are not so good now I look forward to you posting about Gla's figures being better than edi's in a couple of months due that fact Glasgow will get :

Air Canada Daily 767-300
American Airlines Daily 767-300
Continental Daily 767-400
JMC A330 to Canda and USA
Airtours A330/763 to Canada and USA
Brittania 763 to USA
also the new charter airlines like KTHY the turkish airline which have just started and when the Go start the East Midlands run, now that is a load of passengers which will see edi down on figures.

The big thing is it shouldnt be my airport is better than your airport I think it is good to see both airports prosper and believe me I have seen first hand from edi tower just how difficult it is at the moment to maintain the traffic flowing freely, they have major problems with the fact the tower cant see very much, they're are no highspeed turn offs, no parallel taxi-ways and a stupid terminal layout plus the fact that runway 12-30 is blocked more often than not for larger jets reducing the ability for flexibility for smaller traffic like ATP's and D328's.

So in short just be happy edi is doing well and dont try and turn it into a us versus them, what we really need is for the BAA to get there fingers out and upgrade edi's facilities and encourage airlines like Go and Easyjet and Ryanair to operate to destinations like Malaga, Palma because there is a very big market for it here in Scotland.

And it wont be long before MOL or Ryanair decides that they need to be at Glasgow Airport not Prestwick!!

Wink

The official NATS figures for both Glasgow and Einburgh for last year show that Edinburgh beat Glasgow overall.

Glasgow movements were 110,968 whilst Edinburghs were 112,327. Although these are movements rather than passenger figures it does show that Edinburgh is expanding and the probabiltity is that it will continue to do so.

Its good to see that the passenger figures are at last starting to represent this trend.

Edinburgh airport has been "neglected" for too long.
As Deeko has already said we do have "constraints" at Edinburgh, which makes the traffic levels sometimes difficult to handle. One plane turning the wrong way could lead to gridlock!!

However, as already stated, why are we concentrating on comparing both these airports?? We should just be glad that people are once again travelling by airplane, and that the Scottish ecomony is benefiting.

Surely thats what its all about?

Does it really matter ?
I didn't see the airport staff at Glasgow reeling this morning.

Surely the important thing is that both airports provide a substantial economic boost to the economy of the area.

Both airports cater for the individual needs of the region, and surely the only realistic competition for charter flights passengers who want a destination served by both, and who come from an area which is equidistant from either airport.

Hi
I agree that its good to see both airports figures rise, but Joe does not like that. You will see this from the newsgroup that he sits on in Edinburgh.

My company had a stand at this weeks VisitScotland Expo and we were being kept busy by people wanting to talk about various transfers/travel arrangements within Scotland.

The North American buyers were very good indeed and they are looking forward to a increase in passenger numbers to the Scotland this summer.

We have already started taking work for May, Jun, Jul, Aug and even Sep. So people are on the move again and booking their summer holidays etc.

On the European side, well thats looking good as well, with major parties flying into Scotland to go on coach tours of the Country.

I dont care which airport people fly into as long as they are flying.

regards John
