Who's gonna get Air Berlin ?
Air Berlin has reportedly been urged by its largest shareholder, Etihad Airways, to join cooperation talks with Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines that Etihad has been holding for several months already. According to statements by Etihad CEO James Hogan published by Süddeutsche Zeitung in Germany, Etihad would have asked Air Berlin to start operating joint flights with Air France-KLM.
........... Air Berlin is already a One World partner and code shares on some BA routes..........

All is answered here: Air Berlin and Etihad seal broad codeshare with Air France-KLM
Wonder how this will work... Air Berlin is having huge issues... On the other hand it is a one of opportunity for KLM/AF to get in touch with the no2 in Germany

In general, buying out the No 2 in another market and trying to increase their market share by substantial investment has a pretty ropey track record (Lufthansa with BMI, and many others)
Well BA are already "in touch" with this No 2 in Germany, and appear to have gained nothing from it. Just like when they owned Deutsche BA, the No 2 in the 1990s, and lost large amounts of money as a result (ironically, it ended up being merged into Air Berlin).
Easyjet had an option to buy DBA but ultimately decided not to exercise the option

DBA was taken over by AirBerlin, when easyJet backed away from the deal, at a point when easyJet had already make a significant down payment, which was non refundable.
