Well BA are already "in touch" with this No 2 in Germany, and appear to have gained nothing from it. Just like when they owned Deutsche BA, the No 2 in the 1990s, and lost large amounts of money as a result (ironically, it ended up being merged into Air Berlin).
In general, buying out the No 2 in another market and trying to increase their market share by substantial investment has a pretty ropey track record (Lufthansa with BMI, and many others)
