160to4DME,. .. .I did not know that there was a veto on certain themes. This posting did concern Liverpool (even though as usual it has been sidetracked to some degree) so I thought it was legitimate to bring up Liverpool.. .. .While I am here, some other topics I have posted on:. .. .MAN, BFS, LHR, LGW, EDI, GLA, NCE, PARIS, BRU, British Airways, easyJet, BMi, Ryanair........

No Jocko. .It won't be businessmen flying easy and Ryan it will definitely be tourists. I don't know of any "No Frills" carrier that have a contract with any major company, or ever has had a contract for that matter. Being the once owner of a travel agency (three locations) I can attest to the fact that we have yet to sign a business/airline contract with any no frills/charter airline. We have business clients and contracts with all the majors who fly to/from YYZ. Alas, none with charter or "No Frills" carriers.. .. .I do have a question for you though; Why, do you think, Liverpool Airport owners re-named the facility for John Lennon? I mean the resulting, massive, publicity coupe won't garner any further traffic for the airport, according to you. I would be honestly interested in your theory as to why the obviously astute businessmen at Peel Holdings would go to the expense of this, again according to you, futile costly re-naming excersize.

Firstly business men/women will and do use the no frills airlines but they are not likely to be working for big multi-nationals more likely small to medium size companies where costs are even more critical.Business people travelling from outside Europe will as i have said probably conect onto a ONE WORLD or STAR ALLIANCE partner for internal flights in the U.K.. .The majority of people using the new services will be people who will not/can not pay full prices or who would rather fly from Liverpool because it is easier.. .As for renaming the airport, does not bother me either way but the few moments it had in the spotlight have gone now as far as most people are concerned. It is not going to suddenly cause an influx of passengers, the airlines offering cheap seats will more likely do that.. .You could rename as many airports in the world as you want, and along the way they may get some coverage on television but airlines combined with fares and a host of other factors bring passengers to an airport not a name.. .Lets be realistic Yoko and J.Lennon have a lot of followers in the U.S.A (for example) that is why it had some coverage, they could have been naming almost anything after him and it would have attracted attention, but it aint going to bring loads of tourists through the airport because of it.

So Liverpool is not a tourist destination? How do you account for all the tourists Ezy have brought from Spain? People fly INTO Liverpool as well as out from it!! . .. .Ryanair obviously have taken notice of the new name, and it is clearly not only a new name, but also a "rebranding" of Liverpool Airport. Surely that is the whole point of the exercise. If all the publicity brings even one more destination t Liverpool, then it is all worth it!!. .. .Manchester must think it worthwhile, anyone else noticed how they have started advertising new routes too?!

As opposed, for instance, to keeping them a closely guarded secret????. .

OK Jocko. .So who is Grantley Adams, Norman Manley, Alexander Bustamante, Jose Marti, Lester Pearson to name a few? And I bet 99 out of every 100 people world wide wouldn't know who any of them where. However, I bet dollars to donuts that 99 out of every 100 people could tell you who John Lennon was, and further more could tell what city he called home.

I think Ringwayman has answered your question Onan.As for your post Madge what a surprise that Manch are advertising routes there was me thinking they were trying to keep it quiet that they had an airport.Dont get me wrong the North West has now got the best range of services outside Londinium and the S.E and that is a good thing but renaming Liverpool is not going to put them on the map any more than they already are.The no frills boys are as was said bringing people in as well as out and as far as Liverpool Airport is concerned they like that but airlines dont suddenly change a city into a tourist mecca it needs a lot more than that. The majority of people flying in and out of the N.W need to for other reasons and as i have said the majority of Yanks/Japs etc (who will spend the money) are not that interested in anything other than a few select places in the U.K.Its not a slur on LPL but you would have to change the mind set of lots of overseas visitors and Ryanair/Easy are not going to do that.I am willing to bet that the majority of passengers on flights to/from LPL originate in and around the N.W and are using the services because of reasons stated in this and other posts about N.W airports.

But really, why would a obvious astute company fork out shareholders equity just to re-name a facility after a rock musician? Surely Peel Holdings are not just John Lennon fans. It is an explanation that still goes begging. There must surely be a reason for this very succesful company spending a reported . .three hundred thousand pounds, just for the statue of John Lennon. My personal opinion is that it was done to garner publicity, and boy! did it ever pay off. But perhaps some others can offer a more plausable explanation.

It may well have given us a few sore wrists responding so much but at the end of the day even though im sure it was done for genuine and good publicity reasons it aint going to suddenly make people flock to the airport or the city.As has been said the airlines will put more people through the airport not some publicity stunt. At least Ryanair will actually be flying in and out of an airport that is next to the city unless they are planning on calling it "London Liverpool John Lennon ....." by which stage most people will have switched off,but then the name change might help because some dumb Yanks might think its next to London so there is your increase in tourists.

Regarding the comment "the majority of passengers on flights to/from LPL originate in and around the N.W" then it follows that as and when easyJet/Ryanair crack the inbound tourist/businessman traffic passengers not only their new aircraft deliveries may have to be speeded up, but Liverpool airport will have to find more terminal capacity.. .. .Also as to the rebranding question, aviation/airline companies do this with increasing regularity, for example, BA, BMi, BE, Britannia and Airtours.

Im sure Ryanair/Easy will increase passenger throughput at Liverpool but like it or lump it Liverpool is not a major tourist destination the majority of people on these flights are,i know as i have flown on them , small time business peeps and Brits looking for a new place to get pissed in and they originate in and around the N.W.Dont get me wrong this is all good for the region as we have or will have a full spectrum of services to many destinations whatever your preference. As for rebranding airlines are seen all over the palce so a polished new scheme may get them noticed changing the name of the airport isnt that much its not going to put Liverpool on the map any more than it already is,same for Manch if they did it.

My mother-in-law was born in Manchester, but she lives in Dehra Dun in Uttar Pradesh and calls that home.. .. .John Lennon was undoubtedly born in Liverpool, but if he'd invited you home for a chip butty before his tragic and untimely death, it would have involved a trip to New York, because that was his home. A fact.. .. .Anyway, with the recent good news for Ringway on the long-haul front and the expansions at Liverpool, things have never been better for passengers to/from the North-West of England. ( A Scots collegue from Wick reminded me this morning that we're ALL b****y Southerners but I digress) Can't we all just be happy with that?. .
