LIN lack of security when boarding passengers

I flew back from Milan Linate on the weekend on Alitalia. Here is what happened after the transfer bus arrived at the aircraft.

After a moments hesitation, the doors opened. Everyone piled out. The aircrew were waving us not to board so as to let some disabled passengers to board. Much shouting ensued. So we just mingled around the bus. There was no security to stop anyone approaching the airplane or wandering off.

A few passengers walked under the wing, near the engines, to get to the rear ramp as they saw it was present.

Finally a person appeared at the rear ramp and gestured us forward to board. For some reason, after going half way up the ramp, we were stopped by the crew, so had to stand on the ramp for 5 mins before we could board.

There was still no security to stop anyone just wandering off around the airfield.

The jet next to ours, a A320, then started his engines and taxied away as we were standing on the ramp (I had a good view).

I was amazed with the lack of security to prevent passengers either causing harm to themselves or to prevent a security risk to other aircraft.

Is this the usual MO at Italian airports?

I think you maybe too used to overbearing and draconian " health & safety " regulations that make sure idiot humans can't come to any harm. But they are not idiots, they can get off a bus and board an aircraft in relative safety , they might jossle each other while trying to get on the plane but they will stay around the steps to the aircraft until boarding , they won't :

A) run and jump headfirst into the engine of the adjacent taxiing aircraft
B) Sprint off towards the terminal/hangar area or general jog around the apron

I would agree that the bus driver should have kept the pax on the bus until the crew gestured that they were ready to board but you shouldnt be amazed at what happened , maybe suitably refreshed.

I totally agree with getonitt. Regretably, we have a generation that has succumbed to the subtle brainwashing by 'the State' that is totally robbing our citizens of any form of the exercising of common sense and self-responsiblity. We, as a society, are overcontrolled to an extent our fathers could never have dreamed and nowhere in the modern world is that manifested to the nth degree than at airports, especially here in the UK.

Why would anyone (apart from the unlegislatable lunatic) delivered to an aircraft, presumably to board the flight, wander off around the airfield - and unless one of the coachload had pre-determined to make a suicide bid, who was going to be killed by the adjacent aircraft?

No, we give too much credit, and false reliance, upon to the controls that we unquestionably accept and are imposed on us.

In this case, perhaps a few more ground staff might have been desirable but please credit your fellow human beings with a modicum of sense of self preservation - given the location!

Thanks for your replies.

The point was not whether its right in general for everyone to be so paranoid about 'health and safety' (I'm on the liberal side on that argument btw), but that in all the flying I've done I've never seen anything like this, the lack of control etc. Very different to other European/North american airports.

Personally, I would have preferred that the passengers were controlled better, both for the safety of themselves and for my safety so that they could not interfer with any equipment. You just don't know who your fellow passengers are nowadays and what their intentions are.
