UK Winter Runway Assessment Trial - 1 January to 31 March 2011
Your chance to influence future runway state reporting
Following last winter’s poor weather conditions, the CAA hosted two Aerodrome Winter Wash Up meetings in 2010 to assist us and industry in learning lessons from what worked and what didn’t and sharing best practice. They were well attended from all areas of industry and SRG. The overriding message received from industry was that irregular reporting by aerodromes (and ATC) of runway conditions during periods of winter weather was the most pressing issue to be resolved.
This trial is a step in determining a method of providing operators with an estimate of braking action based upon factual runway conditions. The trial involves a table that will allow aerodrome operators to report a qualitative estimated surface friction value based upon the depth, type of contaminant and ambient temperature (in addition to the information that is required to be reported by the latest NOTAL, ATSIN and FODCOM).
The participating aerodromes are Glasgow-Prestwick, Edinburgh, Birmingham and London Stansted. Airline members of the trial management group are BA, easyJet and Thomas Cook, although all airlines that operates into the trial aerodromes are encouraged to take part.
Pilots at the trial aerodromes are invited to feedback their opinions of the trial using forms provided at the aerodromes and online. This will be supported by FDM data only from those flights which we have received the feedback forms annotated with the crew’s agreement.
