Dubai --> MELBOURNE

Mel --> Dubai, just about direct.
Dubai --> Melbourne, tracked South/South East after Indonesia and went down around the bottom of Oz, across south of Adelaide to MEL.

That usual???

This may not sound relevant to the Dubai-Melbourne route, and my experience may be unrelated, but I've flown PER-ADL a few times and it's been an inland route, however last time (Feb) we were much further south and followed the coast virtually all the way to ADL which sounds like a similar routing to yours.
