Ryanair & Aer Lingus?

I note this morning the merger of Delta & Northwest. On the european front what is the situation re FR's attempted take over of AL? FR are the majority share holder here and with depressed financial markets, doubling of fuel prices, a weakness in demand by the flying public and general depression in world economics, surely mergers are on the cards on the european front??

It was stopped by the European Commission. EI is in the process of trying to get Ryanair's stake in them cut.
