Belgian airport sentenced for noise regulation infringements

On the 5th of December, a Bruges Court judge gave verdict in a lawsuit against the Flemish district authority in connection with infringements by the Ostend Airport authorities, more specifically violations concerning environmental Quota Count regulations for maximum night noise by individual airplanes. It was stated by the judge that the airport had considerably exceeded the normative noise regulations over a long period and that the airport management was conscious of those violations, which constituted a severe threat for the neighbouring population.
As a consequence, the airport has been sentenced to a penalty of £ 7,215 (€10,000) for each violation of the night noise regulations. However, the airport authority has been granted three months time to urge the airport users to strictly comply with the regulations, after which the penalty is due to be paid. The airlines particularly affected by the verdict are MK Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines and Gemini Air Cargo.
