Iberia pull Malaga-Heathrow flights from 1st May
If you take a look at either the IB or BA websites, you will find that the once a day AGP-LHR return service has been pulled with effect from 1st May. Passengers are told to rebook on the BA/GB services at no charge, plus not much other options than a refund. Great idea for the summer at such short notice! 
Now, who has used the slot at Heathrow and for what one asks?
We now have untruths related to BA cancelled flights being told by clients as excuses for late arrivals by so called tourists for flights to AGP!
It is going to cost them...but such is the One World product, that anything is believable, unless you check facts out. I shall post this matter on SFL for anyone else who dreams this up to be warned!

I have been a regular visitor to AGP over the past 20 years or so. My parents have property just outside of Fuengirola and I have been lucky enough to be able to take trips down there 2-3 times a year. I have seen it grow from a small regional airport (similar to present day Greek Island airports) into a huge international gateway.
Unfortunately I have not managed a trip down there over the past year. I hear that there's a lot of construction going on at present and the airport will soon be unrecognisable. Last time I was down there, work was just starting on the new terminal. Does anybody know how this is coming along? What sort of scale are these works? When will construction on the 2nd runway begin?
Once the new terminal(s) and runway are complete, how many passengers per annum will the airport be able to process? And what sort of expansion will be seen in terms of new airlines/routes? Most self respecting LCC's and charter carriers already fly into Malaga from most of northern Europe, so will the airport try to concentrate on attracting long-haul destinations. Many American/Middle East tycoons have property in the Marbella/Puerto Banus area, so surely there's scope for attracting US and other long haul carriers.

Easy are now the second biggest carrier after Iberia and have all their own staff and orange handling equipment, including airside buses.

I was in Malaga this week after a gap of two years (when my relations who we visited sold their property on the Costa del Sol) and indeed work is happening everywhere throughout the terminal, the car parks and the train station (the latter will eventually be in a transport interchange in the terminal rather than the current hike over various ramps.) Despite having to wait until exactly two hours before STD, I was impressed with the professionalism and friendliness of Menzies/EasyJet staff, they seem a far cry from what used to be EuroHandling - they even knew how to do pre-boards properly!

Crikey, sounds like a lot has happened since I was last down there. It's actually one of my favourite Spanish airports to fly through. I've been to BCN, MAD, TFS, ACE & LPA and by comparison AGP is by far and away a better experience. I hope they don't ruin this by turning it into a monstrosity!
Interesting to hear about the new transport interchange. I had no idea about this. Not before time though I've gota say! The current airport railway station is about the most user unfriendly station I've ever come across. Any ideas on when this new interchange will be complete?

The railway itself is presently being double tracked and will be extended from Fuengirola down to Algeciras, bringing travel by rail to/from AGP to more people on the coast.

I also think the airport authorities or powers to be are to be commended at AGP for providing free long term parking at P3 during the construction period......something the UK airports would never consider I feel.

Will there be any long haul routes available from Malaga in the near future as a result of the continuing expansion of the airport? Does anyone think there's enough scope for US/Middle East (for example) carriers to start up?
Historically, I remember Royal used to operate a weekly service to Toronto which I think lasted for 2 summers (2000 & 2001 if I remember correctly.)Have there been any other long haul routes served from AGP in the past?

New runway at Malaga
I see from the model layout in the departures hall at Malaga airport that the new runway, due to open in 2010, lies in the general direction of Guadalhorce Nature Reserve. This reserve is a favourite haunt of large flocks of migrating birds in spring and autumn. The reserve is located at the estuary of the Guadalhorce river. Unfortunately, the coverage of the model is confined to the airfield boundaries and does not extend as far as the reserve.
Researching the web, I tried to find whether the extended centreline of the new runway will pass directly over the reserve or to one side. I found a reference to an Environmental Impact Statement "Official Gazette of the Spanish State, BOE No. 240, dated 7 October 2003 (pages 36306-36313)" but could not get the actual text.
Does any member of this forum have a copy of this EIS and if so, could he/she post the relevant extract on the forum?
Can anyone on the forum supply information on the proposed arrival and departure procedures for the new runway?
