BARTON

Barton, could this be Manchester's future second airport

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co....me_change.html

BARTON Aerodrome is to be renamed City Airport Manchester - even though it's in Salford.

The aerodrome was bought by Manchester Ship Canal Developments - a joint venture between Peel Airports and Manchester council - in 2002.

Now they are hoping that the change of name will prompt an increase in users, particularly executive business flyers.

Steve Gill, the airport's managing director, said: "City Airport Manchester will build on the history of Barton Aerodrome and will continue to offer a variety of services to both organisations and individuals.

"The airport is in an excellent location and by improving existing facilities and investing further we hope to attract additional users."

Since 2002, Manchester Ship Canal Developments has invested £250,000 in the facilities at the Liverpool Road site in Eccles, and spent £75,000 on refurbishing the control tower.

However, Salford's civic leaders are outraged that the company has decided to change the name without any consultation.

Salford leader Coun John Merry said: "I would like them to retain the local area link. We will be wanting to know why they want to change the name but we have no power to decide it. I'm not keen on the new name and I'm concerned that they don't sever links with the local community."

'Awful'

Conservative leader Coun. Karen Garrido said: "It's awful. For goodness sake, everyone else wants to be in Salford - even the BBC. I shall be having a word about this."

And Coun. David Lancaster added: "I don`t see why they should want to change the name and if they did it should still have a Salford link. I will be taking this up with Peel."

Barton Aerodrome is operated by Lancashire Aero Club on behalf of the Manchester Ship Canal Developments.

When the lease expires later this month Peel Airports will take over the management and will continue to offer Lancashire Aero Club a home at the site.

Its control tower is Grade II-listed and has been in continual use since 1928.

There are almost 60,000 landings and take-offs a year.

Suspect that all the power lines around Barton, and the M60 Barton Bridge could prove to be inhibitors to the development of flights.

By 'improving existing facilities' I can only assume that they intend to fill in all the potholes in the grass so that it more resembles a runway than a golf course.

I don't have much of a problem taking off or landing there.

Clocked up about 350 hours out of there in the last 6 years.

Great airfield, shame about the politics.

At least its not going to close and be turned into a shopping centre........................yet.

Just hope the cost of flying is not going to go though the roof.

I know that Peel Holdings have been trying to get hold of control of Barton for some time.......heard the rumours as a youngster years ago so interesting that something is finally happening.

Presumably if this vision is to be realised they will have to extend the runway not to mention tarmac it......someone called it a golf course.....on some days its worse than a rugby field let alone a golf course........do Peel Holdings own the land surrounding Barton i.e. to the North-East and West of the 09/27?

The airport is owned 50% by Peel and the other 50% is owned i believe, by Manchester City Council, who are the majority shareholders of Manchester Airport.

"BARTON Aerodrome is to be renamed City Airport Manchester - even though it's in Salford"

Just like that famous united football club whose ground is in Salford but are named from Manchester !!!

Using this logic I'd be suggesting Barton urgently reconsiders a name change.......the words "City" and "Manchester" being synonymous with failure of monumental proportions.

To bring this back to aviation matters:

Looking at the current site even if they tarmac the whole lot there's not much scope for a runway that will accommodate an aircraft of any significant size - so do Peel Holdings own the land adjacent to Barton which could be used to lengthen a runway? Now obstacles.....there's another matter!!
