The Alliances- Varig to Leave Star

Varig are leaving the Star Alliance on January 31st. This is an interesting move, Aer Lingus leaving the OneWorld alliance too.

Looks like 2007 is going to be an interesting year for the alliances. What with all the possible consolidation in the US? If USairways merge with Delta, where will the new Delta be in terms of Alliance. Skyteam or Star Alliance.

What does anyone think? I can see this whole area being an interesting talking point in the coming months!

Your wording gives the impression that Varig chose to leave Star, as Aer Lingus did with oneWorld. Actually, Star threw Varig out!

Airlines in extreme trouble or going through violent financial manoeuvres are not popular members of alliances. I think you will find it is a 'weeding out' process rather than any great financial strategy.
