BA orders 20 new B777s...

Any truth to the rumour that BA has ordered an initial batch of 20 B777-236LRs. Heard this yeaterday from a usually reliable source from within the airline industry. However the deal is being kept quiet until some sort of pension agreement can be agreed.

See the thread on BA strike...

Some say this same rumour comes from some 'tiddly' Boeing salesmen travelling back to SEA in 1st with BA... couldn't help boasting about the deal...
now if BA say they can't afford the pensions deficit we won't believe them...

Doesn't make much sense to me; I would have thought -300ERs would be a lot more likely.

What routes would BA want to operate -200LRs on, that can't be operated by -200ERs?

Anyway, as said above, they aren't expected to make any orders until the whole pensions issue has been sorted out.

I dunno about ordering 20 new 777s, but I do know that WW and Martin George have sold a bundle of shares over the last few days topping over a quater of a mill

Perhaps that was to make the deposit on the HP?

Cannot see -200LRs in the fleet in any meaningful quantities...much more likely to be -300ERs as they're a good Classic/744 replacement and after all, actually cheaper per copy than the -200LR!

It'll be -300ERs and possibly some -200s. Expect to hear in April once the pension issue has been resolved (either way).

The big question: will BA become a launch customer for the 747-800?

I wonder which mod took exception to my question to t500 (where's your question mark). I didn't realise I had acquired 411A's reputation for abusing people. The post article header is misleading - it reads as if an announcement has been made so the OP can drag some attention to a question which should be in, well, Questions or AA&R. Hopefully t500 will have the manners to change it him/herself.

No - nothing will be done until the pension shortfall is covered by agreement with employees. BA also currently refuse to be involved in any lauch aircraft.

Have a look at Flight's comments on the matter a couple of weeks ago through interview with BA.

In short, yes. My impeccable source tells me that the aircraft are -300's and that Boeing's press people have been told to keep quiet due to the pensions arguement.

Airplane Families 2005 $ in Millions
737 Family
737-600 45.5 -- 53.5
737-700 52.0 -- 61.0
737-800 63.5 -- 72.0
737-900 66.5 -- 77.0

Do you really think the discounts are so good as to make them $1m a hull?

This is interesting because I was chatting to an EK Captain who told me downroute that BA had put in a big order for 773's and it was done on the basis of Boeing keeping quiet because of the pension issue. I laughed it off at the time as he mentioned the pension debacle, but perhaps the joke was on me after all.

Pension first, 773's later

Darkstar; I am amazed that as a senior FC member you get sucked into these rumours which have little or no foundation. It is as well that you are not still part of the SS management where 3 of the existing 7 have to go by the end of March. BA would be hard pressed to purchase a new fleet of EMB's let alone 77's.
