Thumbs down BAA Gatwick - Majority of airport grinds to a halt for 2nd day running...

In around the past 6 months, Gatwick Airport has ground to a halt 4 times because of a seemingly unfixable BAA network failure which always brings down with it all check-in and other automated systems. All carriers in both terminals are affected with the exception of BA as they use their own systems directly.

Yesterday saw an outage from 0400z to around 1615z. Operational carnage, particularly in the South Terminal, ensued. Only a few automated check-in desks were available and customers queued like cattle in what can only be described as a third world airport experience.

Today at 1040z seemingly the same fault occurred again but by all accounts on the grandest scale to date. All check-in and consequently both terminals (with the exception of BA again) ground to a halt whilst the mad scramble for desks for manual check-in started.

It seems there's no end in sight to this massive problem and the engineers are again none the wiser. The rest of the day and possibly beyond will be another expensive operational mess for all concerned.

If you're using Gatwick today (or possibly tomorrow & beyond at this rate), the very best of luck.

"The world's leading airport company".....???!!!

Maybe we should also congratulate BA for their strategic decision to develop and implement their own system, thus keeping any technical problems in house and firmly in the bailewick of Im.

Is that the same BA who's 'in-house' system EWS is now shut down all weekend therefore causing major problems with Engineering

Yes but you have failed to notice that BAA has been concentrating all its efforts on building new shopping facilities to relieve the frustrated SLF of their cash during the ensuing chaos caused by the archaic computer system failing yet again! Brilliant strategy !

I can't believe that the entire 4-node cluster has failed all weekend. Are you sure this isn't a planned outage?

(Not saying that it doesn't cause you a problem though...)

On the subject of BAA spending some money at LGW, are they changing all the jetties on the South terminal satellite to glass ones, or just the one that they are currently working on.

The interiors off the old ones are disgusting.
Glass ones are also nicer so we can spot any good looking girlies that are boarding

So once again it seems proved that London-bound passengers should avoid BAA airports and fly in /out of Luton (which in many cases will be closer to home or final destination).

It was a planned outage, backup procedures in place. There will be catch up over the next few days.... but I don't think there was any significant disruption.
