Snow closes manchester airport

Chaos today when Manchester closed both runways for snow clearance, with aircraft diverting to Liverpool and elsewhere.Bad weather had been well forecast and the airport was supposedly well prepared,so what went wrong yet again. Will this airport ever be prepared for a little bit of winter weather ?

As a local, the abundance of large wet flakes & approx 1 inch covering, came as a suprise this morning. I was not aware of any TV local weather forecast of snow. It started to thaw but is now freezing so be careful out there.

No matter how well forcast the snow is, you still need to close the runway to clear the snow, which is bound to require aircraft to divert!

When it snowed yesterday it came down very thickly and at one point I heard the controller say it was 300 metres and a complete whiteout

Birmingham also had a heavier than forecast belt of snow about 1300 yeasterday ( Monday ) with vis down to about 600 metres at one point ,atis struggling to keep up with the changes , but they coped very well , runway quickly deiced and open again. Only delays caused by the queue for the icing rigs to attend aircraft.

I think the difference was probably just that the time! snow started at Manchester about mid morning at a very busy time for both arrivals and departures

Same thing happened in EDI on friday. Who would have thought that snow might actually appear in Scotland in winter especially after a week of predictions!!!!

Apparently the same people who drive the passenger buses drive the snow plow, hence having to wait TWO hours to board pax when the runway re-opened. That is the excuse given by airport ops.

What sort of mischief are you up to?

Since I live fairly close to the airport I can tell you that snow was not forecast - I check the weather always before flying. There wasn't the slightest indication of what actually happened.

In the event, my flight departed in the afternoon exactly on schedule and looking out over the airfield I was actually quite impressed with the job done under the circumstances - it really was heavy snow.
The flight monitors (in the terminal that I was in anyway) indicated a few delays but only a couple of cancellations.

Why do you think this could only happen at Manchester?

In order to sweep the runways anywhere, you have to close them to do it unless you're so f***ing smart you've worked out a better way.

Easy for you to whinge from the comfort of a warm laptop; try and be constructive or back off.
Weather happens you know.

Yeah i think you need to be a bit fairer.

I diverted from Kinloss last year due to snow, they see plenty of it over a cold winter but there's no point in trying to clear a runway while it's still coming down heavily. The authorities are unable to keep roads clear when they're gritted nevermind runways that can't be.

Wrap up folks
