Leander,sincere thanks for saving me 40p which will now go to the Cabin Crew 'feed yourself fund' .
I could not find the ops update on crewlink so perhaps you could put us all out of our misery and break the 'black and white' news to us.
Then I can march off down to Tesco to buy hot or cold!!.

I haven't seen anything in black and white that states we cannot heat our own food. The only reference that has been made about the subject is the CSD asking the crew to be discreet about where they eat their food.
But if this is the case can someone please copy and paste the relevant memo/document regarding not eating our own heated meals so I can refer it to the union.

you cannot bring or heat up your own food in case the passengers are offended.

WE had a small tray of crew sandwiches plus a yoghurt each to last us a six sector twelve hour day for eight or nine days on the trot before CAP371!
A little bird tells me that BA crews are given $100 cash in their hot little hands if they have to change hotels on the first night of a trip and then they got a free breakfast at the regular hotel.
Jeeez, I wish I'd been spoilt like that but alas my company didn't have the benefit of state hand-outs for many years to give it a sound business footing. It all had to earned.

IMHO it's probably not the smartest move to heat up your own tucker and get the SLF salivating while they're digging into the overpricing cold stuff that they've been forced to buy at the airport concession holders.
I really don't understand why BA can't have some creative catering outfit mass-producing sandwiches/wraps/salads and hand them out in the gate area.
There must be something they can do...
Reminds me of the LH station manager in Sydney (before the route got chopped) who countered a local caterering strike by getting McD to cater the aircraft for the SYD-SIN leg......

To those of you who seem to be in disbelief that BA cant organise a temporary alternative...WHERE TALKING 120000 meals a day!!!!!!!! Come on! They contractors would need access to GG who have all our catering equipment, they would all need to be security checked for airside work. They would have had to order the stuff MONTHS ago!
All the logisitics involved are enourmous. If it could be done it probably would have been done as part of a cheaper business plan years ago!

Wrong. It was probably a good idea to outsource it.
It's a bad idea to outsource it to a company with a history of labour problems and it's a very bad idea not to have contingency plans....

Now that would be an idea. The crewies cooking their meals back in the galley while us SLF smell the aroma and are stuck with zero, not even the so-called frozen stiff "All Day Deli" sandwich which apparently doesn't exist anymore. RIP.
That surely makes me angry that the crew would have privileges over the passengers. Anyone flying business or first class anymore? You get a wider seat and better head phones, but do they still carve the meat in front of you?

Latvia Calling,afraid to say the real days of First Class dining have all but gone .
I can't get an Allan Key or nail clippers through security never mind the twelve inch carving set!! .
Not good times at our airline I'm affraid.
I'm cabin crew and feel so sorry and embarrassed about the state of things and lack of service to our passengers.However I do feel for overall safety of all on board including First and Business class passengers ,our pilots need to be in top condition should things go wrong and if that means giving them a hot meal they bring in themselves then so be it.
Just a personal thought.

Having a contingency plan is all very well. Trouble is that whereever the stuff comes from, it has to get on the plane somehow. Remember the whole thing turned nasty when BA (yes BA) staff refused to work AKA solidarity (or secondary) strike. Illegal of course, but what the heck.
So what do you think would happen if that catering truck labelled "Contingency Caterers Ltd." were to pull op next to a plane in full sight of the loaders' shop steward ?

YOu like everyone else who has been watching the news the past week are aware that BA have no food onboard....why not be prepared and bring your own food with you...no airline is a restaurant anyway. And even if we did have food onboard at the moment you would probably just be complaining about the quality of it anyways! The crew are buying their own food out of their own pocket and too right, they are up all day and night working to fly ungreatfuls like yourself around the world!!!

Errr ! I always thought that staff shoul be grateful fo customers (who pay the salaries) rather than the other way round.
And when I pay umpty hundred/thousand pounds, six or seven times a year (on average - often more - 4 so far this year) for my longhaul business class flights I do rather expect an effort to provide a restaurant (within the technical limitations). Short/medium haul I will settle for an easier airport passage and a bit more space onboard.
Perhaps apaddyinuk you are one of the reasons why I select the airlines to be grateful to ?
Having seen Max Angle's subsequent comment let me make clear that I fully agree that crew (particularly long haul - and my initial post makes the difference from short/medium haul quite clear) should be properly rested, prepared and nourished as a priority.
It is apaddyinuk's comments about gratitude that 'got my goat' - his/her attitude is the one that sends high spending customers looking elsewhere (not the short term lack of food in circumstances we can understand - and I have no problem arriving with a very tasty alternative to look after myself in such circumstances).

I suspect we all agree that it is better and safer for crews to be well nourished, more important I am sure that they are well hydrated. Surely this problem can be resolved with a little common sense and discretion. OK maybe the pax will smell the food being cooked...so be it....so long as the crew, especially those in the cabin are discreet about consumption so as not to 'rub their noses in it' that is fair enough. Don't work for BA haven't seen any internal documents..however surely a simple missive advising crews to be discreet if heating and consuming meals and to keep in mind the inconvenience the pax are suffering would have sufficed...and maybe saved PPrune some bandwidth!!!
On another point, the longer the lack of catering goes on the slower the recovery, if it happens, of BA will be. The fewer customers will come back. Really BA management should be putting their thinking caps on about how to rescue the airline's very sullied reputation...for many things....The only thing BA has going for it right now is some limited/poor competition on some routes and an excellent and deserved reputation for safety.
Personally I would only fly BA if the route was not served by another half way reputable carrier. I am sure many other pax who have experienced the nightmares of the last three summer, fly BA as a last choice or where there is no viable choice.

If I were sitting down the back I would much rather my drivers had a hot meal inside them.
I'm not so bothered around Europe, but if any airline seriously thinks I'll pay J class fares (which I do several times per year) for coffee and no food they are out of their minds.
I need to be fit for work when I arrive at where I'm going, since I have to get off the plane and deliver ny service. My clients expect 100% performance too, its not a safety issue, but the future success of my business depends on it, since the world is a small place these days and I work in a niche occupation.
As for Apaddy - I sometimes wonder if he's a secret weapon for another airline, since the rubbish s/he comes out with beggars belief, unlike whattimedoweland, who is demonstrating the ability to put him/herself in the position of the pax and is not trying to defend the indefensible.
As it happens, I quite like BA on long haul, but if they want to earn their premium fares, they have to provide a premium service and until they do, I won't use them. (But I will give them another chance when sorted, because on the whole they've done well for me over the years.)
