Short staff at Gatwick

Arrived back on a Air Excel flight this morning, the Scheduled time was 04.10 but landed at 04.25.

Waited over 1 hour before the baggage arrived and when questioned a member of staff , a shrug of shoulders "Short Staff", If they knew the flight was arriving then why not put more staff on early. there where 2 other flights awaiting baggage and they waited alot less time.

Whats the answer ?

There are 3 Handling Agents in the South Terminal and it's quite possible that the other 2 flights were handled by a different company from the one employed by Excel.

I know it's frustrating waiting for baggage - I've waited over 90mins myself for bags after a flight of less then 30 mins!

I suggest that you write complaining to Excel - they need feedback otherwise they'll maybe not feel the need to take their Handler to task.

Cheers,

The handling comapines dont care if you wait 60/90mins for bags, arrivaling flights in the early hours of the morining is busy when the nite crew are not on the same size scale as the day stift. Night crews are the same at other airports and opearte in small numbers like 10-20 members of staff to handle a couple of flights and morining flights are busy coz all staff are trying to onload flights to get them out ontime, this may affect the offloading of some inbound flights. And we shrug our shoulders coz we are feed up as much as u r but its out of our powers.

Its not only during the night that luggage takes a while to arrive at Gatwick. On 1st August I arrived on the mid day BA flight from Edinburgh. The luggage took ages to arrive on the belt and when we asked we were told that the handlers had been sent to the wrong gate. Dontcha just love it when all that planning works.

Unfortunately, this is a regular thing we are seeing at gatwick at the mo. Some people waiting 2hr for their bags on a busy fri/sat night.

The other night we were 4th in a queue just to be unloaded. We waited about an hour or so for someone to arrive.

It is not the loaders fault, i feel quite sorry for them, its just upper management trying to get their 100k bonuses for reducing costs for a company.

The loaders are probably one of the hardest working airport workers i know, they jump from a/c to a/c unloading and loading lugging 20kg + bags about sometimes in torrential rain.

Not sure about many of us but i certainly wouldnt like to do it and when we have a loading delay, i look at the loaders and think, poor b*****ds, coz they will get an earfull from their manager as to why the a/c went late.
Its not thier fault they are run ragged.

The airports these days, especially gatwick is going downhill day by day, everyone is stressed, the terminal is packed most days, abuse is on the increase and overwork and understaff is the norm.

Sad state to be in but thats gatwick.

Sorry to moan but that is how it is at the moment which in turn, effects the passengers and the perception they will have of the airline.

Many Thx

What aircraft type did you fly on? Maybe the staff were too short to jump up into the baggage hold. No doubt they were trying, but they can't help being short.
