Yehh right,

they can't even get the travalator's to work, typically 1 out of 3 are switched on, the airport is a disgrace more like something out of deepest Africa than 'the worlds best' !!!
parking stands that are, let's face it - crap, taxiways that are full of holes, queues everywhere and a road system that is out of a spaghetti western !!
don't think the big carriers will be too impressed.

Unfortunately, these rumours have been going on for years. I remember management at the airport in the mid 1980's announcing they were in talks with the same airlines to start services into Manch. It's easy to trumpet your plans, but much harder to turn them into reality. I'll keep my fingers crossed for these new services, but don't hold your breath.

USUAL FROTH.......!

Regretfully the MEN had a similar headline in 1984 !

Who remembers

"Manchester Gateway To The World" in the late eighties !

yawn !

....well is it just me or we are still waiting....!

It's great that the airport is doing so well in certain markets, but the reality is that in terms of Long Haul we are going backwards when compared to realistic market comparisons, rather than the usual year on year pax figures that only compare MAN with itself !

It's a self-gratification exercise which constantly goes unchallenged .... and as long as the figures keep going steadily up which is after all inevitable, nobody will ever question them !

You could have some elderley dears from the local parish council running the place and the pax would still increase...

We have no services to :-

Australia
NZ
China
Japan
HK
South Africa
Or India

all the MAJOR markets !

...and no services by the national carrier save for a handful of codeshare agreements and of course the good old daily JFK which limps along....same frequency, same capacity, oh and nearly forgot same aircraft ! ( come on old girl keep going ...! )

The USA and The Middle and Far East are not bad but in reality compared to LHR the numbers are utterley pathetic and BMI well
they seem as inept as BAs performance at MAN by producing a seemingly brilliant product only to now throw it away peice by peice !

At least BA are brazen enough to state they are not interested !

There are now by way of example 4 flights a day minimum into LHR from Sydney and Jo' Burg surely at that level there is a assumption that airlines would top out at frequency and then look elsewhere...sadly it aint happening and with a new terminal going up and larger aircraft there is no reason to change the status quo...!

....its also a bit rich quoting Air India, look what happens when we do score an occasional modest victory, MAN had them sewn up and still managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by throwing them away to BHX !

It ironic that the regions now have more varied and more frequent connections to Manchester than the South East but MAN itself still does not seem to have either the clout in terms of marketing expertise or account management to capitalise on this.

Nor it seems do we have the right investagative journalists at the MEN who can ask some telling questions rather than simply re-print airport press releases rehashed from 20 years ago..

discuss !

I have just dropped my sons off to go to San Francisco to a wedding, from Manchester.
One has gone KLM via Schipol. One has gone Lufthansa via Frankfurt/Munich.
Bloody ridiculous that we can't connect to the west side of USA from Manch.
BA have got one old banger of a 767 to JFK daily from a fabulous terminal. What a waste. Lets hope WW will make terminal 3 a proper gateway for northern folk and give the loco's and transatlantics a run for their money. WAKE UP MANCHESTER.

For a City of its size I do not think that Manchester can have many complaints about its range of services.

All UK cities outside London would give their right arm ( if they had one ) for a similar range of servies.

Come to think of it so would alot of European Cities.

Less of the old banger old chap, the aircraft to which you refer is 14 years old, just getting in to its middle years. There is a whole crop of American Airlines B767s operating through MAN which is considerably older.

I would love to see Manchester do well, but it really isnt in the most clean of states to base any services (especially as services are not guaranteed high-yielding-first class services).

Terminal 3 is occupied by BA and any international development has got to come from them or One World. AA are slowly doing this and Cathay I think are very likely to come back soon. However, morning capacity is an issue as well as BA hindering any development so not to detract from Heathrow.

Terminal one is full of charter and low cos, with the Star Alliance unable to come together as one (which would be a huge development as Manchester could be a much more effective hub, both for the passengers and the airlines - with new services coming more easily). But capacity is reached and no domestic facility means bmi cannot bring their UK services, which are an essential part of a UK Star hub. Also bmi would be unwilling to leave their convenient T£ domestic setup.

Terminal two is the best terminal on the airport, and Skyteam have quietly taken advantage of this...and I wouldnt be surprised to see this develop further into a nice little operation. Star would like to occupy the extension coming in a few years..but this has to be evaluated as bmi's domestic services would be the flights length away from the runway before engine startup!!

I think with aviation growing as it is, Manchester should be looking to rely less on charter and loco carriers and provide more for the full service airlines. Perhaps the proposed T4 could provide this. Or worse start to farm off the locos and charter to these new airports spawning around the country.

Manchester can handle these services, and can provide fully for the North West. I also feel that awareness needs to be raised. How many people still think that to go long haul they need to go from london - its surprisingly high. Manchester needs to make some definite strategic decisions that might cause some upset, but will ultimately do them well for the future.

My thoughts..

Cool

Centre cities

MAN's catchment area is far greater than just the city of Manchester itself. It also caters, in the Long Haul market, for the cities of Liverpool, Leeds, Preston and Blackburn. A plethora of towns the size of Warrington and Wigan too numerous to mention as well as North Wales, North Midlands, Cheshire, Lancashire, West, South and North Yorkshire, Merseyside, South Lakeland, areas of the North East of England and thanks to the lo-cost carrier explosion, now Eire and Northern Ireland are easily connected.

I caught a flight last night to DXB as a pax and there were no less than 25 pax from the EI's DUB flight alone & a half a dozen from WW's BFS service.

Up and coming carriers like EK and QA are seizing the initiative and offering value for money services to Aus/NZ and the Far East linking through their respective hubs and they are chokka'. All the proof you need is the increase of frequency of services and introduction of larger equipment on these routes by EK and QA.

My girlfriend travelled on a service to/from KL with Malaysian back in Mar/Apr. She said the flight was full and they had to leave some pax behind. So the market is there for Point-to-Point routes ex-MAN.

But they need to drastically improve their facilities land and air side before hoping to become a major TransAtlantic/European gateway. Staring with quality 24 hour hot & cold beverage facilities landside to removing the 'permanent temporary' steel 'tile' near the end of Pier C.
