LHR road names

OK, here's one for the anoraks:

Just looking at a map of LHR, and it looks like the roads adopt a naming patter according to what part of the site they are on - presumably NSEW / C for central?

Just curious though about the choice of places. In Central, they generally seem to be in the UK, but T3 is on Canberra Road. Now Canberra may be the capital of Australia, but couldn't they pick somewhere you can actually fly to direct from LHR? There must be enough places to choose from - or would that have brought too much attention to all those routes from LHR which have been axed due to slot restrictions?

But has it not been Canberra Road since 1960 and I believe you could fly there in those wonderful times when only the 'toffs' flew.

Wasn't it something to do with Canberra bombers breaking a transatlantic record and landing at Heathrow in the early 1950s?

It has always been my understanding that the road names were from historic a/c and events. Not least the statue of Alcock & Brown that many folk do not notice in the hurly-burly. For the younger folk, whose anorak may not be as fully formed as others these were the first men to fly the Atlantic non-stop. Aviation History
