I disagree with your theory - and for the record - that of the CAA.

Whilst propensity to fly in Wales is lower than the UK average, the market in Wales has been stimulated by LCCs - both bmi baby and Ryanair before them.

CWL needs a strong determination by bmi baby to drive this market further - this will happen in 2006 with the return of their third aircraft.

Let's not give up on bmi baby just yet!

Any thought that niche routes to places like MAD, MXP, GVA, NCE, etc.. are going to work from CWL is a bit of a dream. As an expat CWL pilot it would be lovely to see it happen but it just isn't going to. Before I offend Mr CWL I would like to say I am Welsh and did live in Cardiff for 20 years ! It's a simple numbers game. South Wales is too small and no one is going to drive past BRS or BHX to fly from CWL. If you look at the catchment areas for BRS and BHX there is no contest and there are competitive LCCs at both ! baby have probably got it just about right. The Med is always going to be profitable from CWL as will BFS, CDG, JER, EDI and GLA but after that there is probably not much money to be made on a really regular basis. The key word being REGULAR ! There just aren't enough people in South Wales who want to go somewhere like Madrid or Milan EVERY day or even every other day.

Until that road gets built, the tolls are removed from the Severn Bridge and South Wales Police stop photographing everyone driving at 75mph on the M4 CWLs future is the same as its past bucket and spade to the MED largely summer only.

CAA have just released information indicating that it is actually affluent people making more journeys rather than less well-off people starting to fly that is helping LCC prosper.
Where do the CAA say this?

I don't know enough about the demographics of the CWL area today to be able to dispute what Cheeky Visual says, I'm sure others will do that if required However it would seem to me that there is an opportunity right now for the Welsh Assembly, local govt, Welsh Industry, the Airport owners and all the airlines to work together to use the appearance of the loco carriers at CWL to stimulate a growth and diversity in the Welsh economy, thereby attracting working population back to Wales, increasing the need for travel and thereby increasing the required effective route structure.

To say that these routes will never happen shows a lack of drive and vision. Wales suffered in the past from relying on steel and coal as it's core industries with little development of anything else. It has to be looking to grow the industrial and service industry base, and Cardiff Airport and the airlines operating out of there are core to the future.

The CWL - Belfast route should transfer back to BHD and be operated by Air Wales themselves as it did successfully before competition from WW at BFS forced them to pull the plug.

With competitive fares there is no reason why it shouldn't work.

Air Wales might also consider taking over MME - Belfast operating to BHD as WW are experiencing very poor loads to BFS.
