Qantas advert

This evening, Monday 7th Feb in the UK, the main commercial tv channel had a new advert for Qantas. The voice over included the statement, "... and an unrivalled saftey record." That, as I understand it is true. However, I was under the impression that no one had stated this in advertising before?

If not, then the imminent arrival of VS operating UK~OZ may be of concern to some folks?

(My apologies to the Mods if this advert was not as 'new' or as different as I thought it was and shift it pronto.)

relevance or not to this forum (which I am not able to judge), it is my understanding that "safety record" and related issues, based on highly statiscal distributions, were considered "out of bounds" by a sort of gentleman's agreement. After all, accidents are pretty damn rare, and the odds of having a record as pristine as our friends down under are just as good as idiot management sinking the company, and on the other dumb luck biting you at six o'clock.

It is QF marketing and accounts department which does this, they are completely ignorant of the so called "never mention the safety record" - Nearly all QF guys dont mention it, as we all know we are just as likely to prang one as the next guy. (And we have had our share of bingles anyway). Especially with our training, or lack of as is the case these days. Of course Touch wood we dont.

Last time we advertised the safety record was in Australia - it had all the guys/girls cringing, needless to say, just a little while after the ads, we promptly went off the runway in Bangkok.

I hope it isnt another forecast of things to come.

Anyway the way QF is being run, & sold off at the moment, it wont exist for many more years.......

"... and an unrivalled saftey record."

That will come as a surprise to other airlines with better safety records than QF.

Southwest is one such example.

That's as I remember hearing it. I was watching live not on tape, so could verify it and I was so surprised by the statement that I couldn't even write it down at first! But, I am sure that there was not a "... safety record in long haul" qualifier.

Far be it for me to stick up for QF but didn't Southwest run off the runway too a little while back?

As regards QF training one should see the latest cardboard bomber they have for the A330. What a joke.

Here we go again.......
Qantas have a perfect safety record.... Yes. Provided you read the fine print and see that it only applies either;
after one of several name changes, or after WW2, or after they started flying jets, or when it is a full moon on a Tuesday etc.
Cut from a previous thread:
Put up your hand all of you who believe Qantas has never had a passenger fatality. OK. Put your hands down now. You are all WRONG!
Qantas have been littering the countryside with wrecked aircraft and dead passengers for a long time.

A search through www.planecrashinfo.com reveals the following info about Qantas' fatalities:

de Havilland DH-9C G-AUED 24 Mar 1927 - 3 died
de Havilland DH-86 VH-USG 15 Nov 1934 - 4 died
de Havilland DH-86 VH-USE 20 Feb 1942 - 9 died
Short S-23 (flying boat) VH-ADU 22 Apr 1943 - 13 died
Lockheed 18 Lodestar VH-CAB 26 Nov 1943 - 15 died
Short S-23 (flying boat) VH-ABB 11 Oct 1944 - 1 died
Lancastrian VH-EAS 07 April 1949 - 0 died
de Havilland Drover II VH-EBQ 16 Jul 1951 - 7 died
Lockheed L1049 VH-EAC 24 August 1960 - 0 died
Boeing B747 VH-OJH 22 September 1999 - 0 died

Also, there is an article about the L1049 crash at Mauritius at http://www.casa.gov.au/avreg/fsa/do...0jan/page49.pdf where it mentions that on 23 March 1946 a Lancastrian G-AGLX operated by Qantas with 5 crew and 5 passengers went missing on a flight between Colombo and Cocos Is. and no trace of it was ever found.
I must admit to once believing that Qantas had a perfect safety record. This shows the power of selecting only the statistics you want. I think Qantas start counting from 1952 onwards. A bit like the White Star Line ruling a line just after the Titanic and counting from there. Qantas do have a good record, but it is not as perfect as some people would have you believe.
