USA to Canary islands
Just wondering if there has ever been a flight from the USA to the Canaries since the Pan Am flight 27 years ago.
Do Americans ever visit the Canary Islands, such as Tenerife or Gran Canaria?

Why should you think Americans would avoid the Canaries? I'm sure you'll find them full of Americans- surfing, kite surfing, running bars, vacationing.....just like everybody else. Frequent flights go there from Europe- why should that accident keep people away now?

Think you'll find most americans in the canaries would have gone via madrid. Probably not the market USA- canaries direct, but with flights to madrid from USA PAX can then connect to nearly anywhere in europe.

Canaries
Probaly a bit carzy but are any of them thinking about JFK/ MIA and on to Canaries with Santa Barbara with the DC 10
I think they're scheduled to do one or two per week
If St B have an interline agreement with one of the Americans they probably could do a good price

Regards to the Pan American flight into the Canries, it was a adhoc charter with all pax connecting to a cruise ship from Las Palmas. Dont think their is the market to do it from US to canaries!

The Canaries are somewhat farther away from the USA than the Caribbean. There are so many places to go in the Carib that I'd imagine they siphon oiff most of the possible market. Also the Caribbean is warmer than the Canaries in the winter - especially the water temp.
West Coast USA tends to go to Mexico or Hawaii in the winter. Getting from the West Coast USA to the Lesser Antilles is a major undertaking, often requiring an overnight layover. The Canaries would be even harder.

Flying from the US to the Canaries via Madrid is quite easy:
IB from JFK, MIA and ORD to MAD, then IB to the Canaries.
AA from MIA to MAD, then IB to the Canaries.
CO from EWK to MAD, then UX to the Canaries.
US from LAX-PHI to MAD, then JK to the Canaries.
(All the flights are on a code-share basis).
However, most of the visitors are from Europe and you won´t see many americans spending their holidays over there.

I spent two weeks on Gran Canaria this past summer (from Europe). A clerk is a jewelry store told me that I was the first American she has spoken with in seven years.
Seacue is correct. West coast Americans head to Mexico or Hawaii. I have traveled to the Caribbean from California, and an overnight stay was required in San Juan, PR.

I was in Teneriffe about ten years ago and met some Americans who said they had flown in direct on a charter from Boston. They said at that time there was a big plug on the Canaries in the USA. This was in January time as I remember, winter is the peak season for the yanks for sun holidays as it gets warm virtually everywhere in continental USA in summer and there really is no reason to travel for them in peak summer. Carribean and Mexico vacations are also big for our yankee friends during the winter.
Don't know how succesful this charter from Boston was or if it is still in operation, don't think so somehow.

On the website of AENA - Spanish airports - there is a searchable database of traffic by airport pair, which goes up to 2002.
www.aena.es
Unless I overlooked something there seemed to be no US-Canaries traffic in 2002, and what looked like a single flight from Detroit to Tenerife South (112 pax) in November 2001. Didn't check any previous years.
Amazing what you can find if you know where to look.

If CF25 was referring to me, then from memory, it was a UAL767, but definately from MIA. It landed about the same time as us and they were on the adjacent baggage carousel.
It was Tuesday 27th July 2004, about Midday. It was not there, nor on the departure board, 2 weeks later when we departed.

Is there English translation. What airline and a/c did the flight from Detroit to Tenerife South?
In the 'group' field you can select other parameters than originating airport. Luckily the 112 in November 2001 does not get lumped in with other data and is identifiable in the other statistics. It's a B727-200adv, it's US-registered, but unfortunately the operator is listed as 'Aviacion Privada'.
