La Linea wants own terminal at airport
La Linea is angling to have its own air terminal linked to Gibraltar's airport.
Their mayor Juan Carlos Juarez said he hoped that what is being negotiated about the airport will include a terminal for La Linea. He makes the point that this was agreed and signed in the 1987 airport agreement that was never implemented.
If all that is being considered are extra flights , La Linea would not benefit.
He recalls that the 1987 deal said that the Spanish authorities would build a new terminal adjacent to the northern perimeter of the frontier fence, and that passengers using the La Linea terminal would have direct access to the airport.
Alonso Rojas, mayor of Los Barrios, said at the weekend that La Linea could have its own terminal which would be a touristic and business boost.
He sees the use of the airport representing a major economic boost. An Irish airline is already interested in offering two flights daily to Madrid and Barcelona, while Iberia and Air Europa are also interested.
The Spanish government, he added, sees a million passengers using the airport each year.
Spanish government plans to spend 180,000 euros to improve the frontier area will have to be increased substantially if the airport deal is clinched.
PSOE socialist senator Jose Carracao also predicts an air terminal for La Linea as well as highlighting the economic importance that will derive from the joint use of the airport.
