BA and IB Joint Business

British Airways and Iberia today (December 16, 2004) concluded an agreement to develop a joint business on key routes between London and Spain from January next year.
The agreement to share revenue and costs covers flights between London Heathrow and Madrid and Barcelona and begins on January 1, 2005.
BA and Iberia, both members of the oneworld alliance, have co-ordinated flight schedules to provide the best spread and choice of timings for passengers travelling between London and Spain’s two major cities. Better connections at the two airlines’ hubs of London Heathrow and Madrid will also mean shorter journey times for customers travelling to destinations around the world.
Rod Eddington, British Airways’ chief executive, said: “Together, British Airways and Iberia will offer customers more choice, more flexibility and improved scheduling throughout the day on these key routes. It is also a significant step forward in deepening and strengthening the relationship between the two airlines.”
Fernando Conte, Iberia’s president, said: "The new schedule will start at the end of March with flights spread more evenly throughout the day. We will offer our customers greater flexibility, as well as improved connections from Madrid to Latin America, and London (Heathrow) to the Middle and Far East. Both companies continue to explore ways for greater cooperation."
The two airlines will operate a schedule of 11 flights a day between London Heathrow and Madrid and eight flights a day between London Heathrow and Barcelona.

This does not appear to offer anything for the consumer. In fact it will be very confusing.. BA operates to MAD/BCN from one terminal at LHR and IB operates from another. So it is not integration of schedules at all, merely yet another absurd code sharing device. It would be better if the whole absurd practice was banned. The people who have got the UK/Spain markets right are ZB, EZY, RYR. EZY alone now carry more UK/Spain pax than BA. While BA management is wasting time and sharehiolders money on ridiculous schemes like this EZY and all the others who seem to understand consumer requirements will be the winners.

It has also been mentioned for some time that some of the current BA South America routes may be passed to IB. This will enable BA to focus on more profitable routes and free up a/c and crew for new India flts plus those new routes that are in the pipeline in the US.
