Ryanair launches new routes
Fri 19 November, 2004 17:21

LONDON (Reuters) - No-frills airline Ryanair Holdings has flagged four new routes to step up competition with rival easyJet and says its founder has sold half his remaining stake in the company.

Ryanair said on Friday it would announce details of a 12th new base on Monday, expected to be in Liverpool in north-west England, where it has scheduled a news conference.

The company said it would launch new daily routes from London Stansted to the Czech Republic, Spain, Poland and a new service from London Gatwick to Knock in Ireland.

Ryanair also said it would increase daily flights on existing routes from London Stansted to Cork and Shannon in Ireland.

Chief Executive Michael O'Leary said the new routes are a challenge to British rival easyJet, which announced two months ago it would take on Ryanair on its home turf with direct services from London's Gatwick to Irish cities.

O'Leary said Ryanair was in talks on establishing new routes with more than 100 airports in central and western Europe that it does not already fly to, and will announce a new base on Monday.

However, Ryanair will also drop some of its less profitable routes. It is in talks with five airports and expects to announce a decision to pull out of three of those within the next two weeks.

The company separately announced its founder Tony Ryan had sold 5 million shares in the airline for 5 euros apiece on Thursday, about half his current stake. He now owns about half of one percent.

O'Leary said he was not planning to sell his any of his stock "at these prices".

He said market conditions were unchanged since the company's first-half results earlier this month although lower fuel prices and a weak dollar were good news.

"I see no fundamental change in the overall market place. There is still going to be a number of casualties this winter," he told reporters.

Ryanair has warned of a bloodbath this winter as it drives down fares in the competitive European low-cost market.

IF all this comes off I think maybe that there is going to be a tad too many seats to fill.

No news on increased flights/ new base at NEMA then?

I think EZY will start to move services to MAN from LPL in the medium term if FR do expand at LPL, they have made a good go at services from LGW, I presume they are profitable as EZY keep expanding their.

Taken from the Telegraph:

"The Irish-registered carrier is likely to deploy three or four aircraft at the airport, flying to more than a dozen destinations. Easyjet operates 13 routes."

What destinations will make up the twelve?

On the domestic front, LPL-STN I would have thought likely. With talk of Flybe opening a base at Norwich, almost certainly with a LPL connection, plus VLM at LCY, some peripheral pax just ripe for the taking.

I think a Liverpool - London flight would work well.

I remember the easyJet LPL - LTN flights were reportedly very successfull. Why did Easy close this route?

LPL-LTN was finished as better yields were available from other routes.

Funy how all the jigsaw pieces are fitting together - easy looking at putting 3 or 4 LPL aircraft at MAN thereby freeing up much needed ramp space at LPL. Lets face it, at the moment there just aint any space at LPL for more aircraft.

hey, just think, LPL international airport may even double its ground transport capacity by getting another bus to transport the pax to the remote stands!

Assuming reports that up to four aircraft are to be based are correct I would expect early morning flights to STN, HHN and CRL to pander for the cost-concious businessman. The fourth aircraft could operate an early mornign CIA to complement the early evening service by the Italian-based aircraft or take over the early Dublin.
I would expect STN to be a three or four times daily frequency tying up one of the 737s. The HHN and CRL twice a day with a Stockholm flight.
A flight to one of the Irish regions could also be on the cards, Knock or Kerry perhaps.
As always with MOL these could be totally wrong and he could surprise everyone by announcing services to all of EZE's current destinations!

I canīt imagine that Ryanair is going in direct competition to Easyjet, but to open services ex LPL to further bases of FR.

I think there's plenty of ramp room at LPL. The based a/c at the mo are 7xEZY, 2xJEM, 1xVLM (10). The number of stands on the main apron is 22, with 4 more just opened in the Tango apron. I make this at least 26 stands, all able to take B737 size a/c. Granted, when summer comes around again and if flyBE eventually base a/c it will get a little busier, but still plenty of space.

The main problem will be getting all the pax out to these stands as most of them will require a long walk/bus trip to board.

Good luck LPL!

I suspect Liverpool will invest quickly in more equipment including buses, they are performing well in relation to on-time performance and maintaining that is their priority. What it signifies is Liverpool is no longer just a local airport for Merseyside but is establishing itself as a gateway to the region.

Forget busses and stands, maybee someone should look at upgrading that Cat II ILS you have.

Ryanair announced that they are to start a Blackpool to Barcelona Gerona from 31st March.

Going by the timings they are switching the Liverpool to Barcelona Gerona flight to Blackpool.

It may mean that the Liverpool to Barcelona Gerona route will be served by Liverpool based aircraft in the summer.
