America West & ATA

FYI

Rumors Continue to Surround America West and ATA

Quoting sources "familiar with the matter," numerous reputable news sources, including the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times, report that America West is in talks about possibly acquiring Indianapolis-based ATA Airlines.

According to the reports, issued last week, America West is in talks to purchase all or part of ATA. Based in Indianapolis, low-fare ATA's operations at Chicago-Midway Airport would likely be of most interest to Tempe, Ariz.-based America West, which doesn't have an eastern U.S. hub.

Adding fuel to the rumors, on Friday America West rescheduled its third quarter earnings announcement and conference call from this Wednesday Oct. 20 to the following Wednesday, Oct. 27.

Loss-making ATA already has said it would run out of cash by early 2005. After the merger rumors emerged last week, the airline announced 156 temporary layoffs, all cabin and flight crew.
