Jersey's missing pax's

High airport costs, iffy weather over a few years and the fact the prices in Jersey are not the value they were a few years ago.

Add to which Loco's have made it so much easier to go some where its warm.

Asfor LBA it little wonder the numbers have dropped off at £150.00 a ticket, sad but who knows what next year will bring.

Devil Atlantic Express' Website

Just had a little shuffle in between "flights" and I've found that Atlantic Express are using the same online reservation system as Air Southwest - Air Kiosk. Seems quite good, anyone else used it ??

Angel Holiday Charters or One offs

Tomorrow Jersey will see one of three charters by Astraeus operating a service down to Malaga for Easter with the next the following friday and then the friday after, with any luck it might turn out to be a B737 700 we can live in hope??.

On the 9th of May Finnair will be visiting with a Boeing 757 i believe to drop some Finns in Jersey, i think i have the correct date.

Any more updates would be greatfull.

We hopefully will see a lot more traffic fron differant operators now the new Airport Director has his feet under the table?? (ha ha)?????

Who knows Jet2
Ryanair
Easyjet

Just to name one or two but some of us know this would be just a dream.

But one good thing the Jersey Air Display will be given a major cash injection towards this years display so a least one thing we can all look forward to.

On the down side major north apron works are due to start in September but if the authorities use there loaf they would not start the work untill the air display is over as this will have a major impact on parking.

At the end of the summer there will be some delays expected at Jersey, due to Major north apron works in progress, plus work going on the south apron with the new operations block for ATC going up on the south side on the new departures building.

Devil Heir Director!!

After a week in office, has our new kiwi been a busy bee and got Jersey some new routes on the drawing board??

On reading the Summer Schedule at www.jerseyairport.com there are some series questions I have about their programme. Some of the information on it is a little questionable, such as:
* The new IOM services are not shown,
* The start and finish dates are in correct.
* MON-FRI PLH WOW route is not shown (It is under Bristol as a via route, but Joe Bloggs may not look there!!)

Any one else found any errors??

GBALU53, could Ryanair consistently get a 737-800 in to Jersey without having to cap the flight to say the level of a 737-300/500?

I only ask because I heard a couple of weeks ago that Thomsonfly put a 737-800 into Jersey and were a little apprehensive about landing it there. Take off would be fine I believe.

Would MoL seriously consider lidding any of his flights?

Personally, and for rather selfish reasons, being from Coventry, I would like to see a return of twice daily Coventry-Jersey flights as Thomsonfly did when they first started.

Angel Boeing 737 800

Seamuscvt

With out looking into book figures i would say a B737-800 srs could operate to Coventy as the sector can only be abote 50 mins subject to traffic.

We have had Excel operate down to Cyprus at the end of the summer with one off charters with there B737-800s.

If the load permits it goes direct or if the aircraft needs a tech stop on-route they go to Beauvais just out-side Paris to the north west.

Beauvais is about a 35 minute sector from Jersey.

Thompson them selves have operated the B737-800 a few times when the 300 or 500 depending on the route has gone u/s

Hope this is of some use we are here to try and help.

I believe FR has a minimum field length requirement of 6,000' for the 738s, so JER is out. They certainly wouldn't tolerate any load limitations anyway.

Hopefully the new airport MD will spearhead some aggressive sales campaigns in the near future. I was encouraged last week to hear Sen. Ozouf talk about the need for increasing links to France.

Given the number of people transferring from LGW to LHR, it would seem ideal for one of AF's regional partners to provide a direct link to CDG, to feed into AF's (and partners') networks. The number of destinations available should easily equal those available via LHR. For one thing, the Polish population in Jersey would probably find it a lot easier to fly back and forth from WAW/KRK etc. via CDG, than via LGW/LHR and there are increasing business links between Paris and the island.

LBA was served for over 50 years from JER and now it is reduced to just one weekly summer charter on a Dash 8.

Is it any surprise people stopped using the service? Bmi Regional were charging £130 return minimum on the route, whilst TOM and WW were offering £40 returns from DSA and MAN respectively, little more than an hours drive away.

My feeling is that a forward thinking airline offering lower fares and suitably-sized aircraft, such as Air Southwest, could still make this route viable year-round.

Even if the route was served in summer only, I would imagine that a daily WOW flight would be well used, or alternatively 3 or 4 x weekly Jet2 flights. Many people in the region are not amused that this route has been lost and have only stopped using it due to the excessive cost in comparison to the competition.

Ryanair fly into londonderry which is less than 6000' rwy length,so RYR operating into to jersey would'nt really be a problem, perhaps on warmer days there maybe some RTOW restrictions.
The reason RYR are reluctant to operate into Jer is probably something to do with the lack of will to negotiate a deal on landing fees, etc.
A lot of airports they operate from pay them to fly into thier airport due to the massive boost to local economy, advertising and high pax numbers etc. that come with it;i somehow think that will make the states twitch a bit.......

Good News

Nice to see the Cardiff route will be operated with Thomson being the route holder and Aer Arann the operator,

The flight i understand willbe operated by an ATR72 so increasing the capicity.

Ref Legsuplucys comments about Ryanair it would look like from the comments, he must be a share holder??

What you give to one like Ryanair ,free landing fees, handling, etc the only thing they might pay is the Fuel at a reduced rate.

An Island as small as Jersey would go bankrupt if the flood gates were opened for there operation the hotels might end uo full if we had enough hotels as well as the resturantes they would help fund the running costs of an airport would they???.

With the likes of Ryanair, you have to look at the overall benefits to the local economy. In 18 months thay have gone from operating 3 routes from Liverpool to 31 from October. Yes, the Airport may not get anything from Ryanair financially, but they have en extra 2.5 million people using the shops and car parks, they have given lots of Jobs to the local community and the have provided a welcome boost to the Tourist industry around the region. So is that such a bad thing? They have also given the likes of me the chance to fly all over Europe for very cheap fares. I'm going to Jersey next week and I've managed to get it for just under £100. With Ryanair, I could do 3 trips for that!

I here what you are saying but 45 squaremile catchment area is not the same as all the airports that a lot of the low cost operators go to, there catchment has a lot more to offer.

It is all very well to say about the other benefits but the airport has to make it pay some how so how do you suggest they do that Legsuplucy made a samilar comments.

Not sure whether you understand economics??
Firstly London stansted and places RYR operate from do Not have a catchment area of 45square miles, are you saying airlines operate from jersey just for islanders to use??
Aeroplanes have to fly to somewhere from jersey, and people fly to the island from other destinations around europe!!Every airport in th UK is seeing growth apart from the channel islands?
Jersey airport authorities are stuck in a rut and have been for some years,is the airport running at a profit at the moment?
I agree Jersey is a Special case, and there is a danger of allowing bigger low cost operators to the island, who perhaps will take the cream away from other airlines such as Flybe who give all year round services, which may push them out;i think the bottom line depends on what direction the politicians wish to take the island, and believe the word Growth of economy has been mentioned,if thats the case this wont be achieved with the current state of affairs!

Certainly, growth in air transport should be a key feature of any plan
for economic growth - whether it's Jersey, Ireland or wherever.
I don't know exactly what the catchment area of Shannon is, but I doubt
if it has 80-90k within 50 miles; Limerick, the nearest city, has a
population of around 30-40,000 (very rough guess ... Actually, very
rough city) Yet, SNN has been able to justify itself as a base for three
FR aircraft (soon to be 4), flying here, there and everywhere. They've
been given a good deal and now, they have the incentive to market SNN
aggressively. And SNN, with such a small catchment area without the
captive market that JER has, handles over 3m ppa (granted US troops and
the SNN stopover haven't hurt!), but terminal traffic at SNN has jumped
significantly thanks to FR.

Some say that getting that kind of volume in here would damage the
island, BUT I would argue that if you minimise the amount spent on
transport (as part of a travel budget), the more will be available for
spending in the local economy; right now, we fail, because the money
goes elsewhere - as we all know.

It does annoy me, for example, when we hear about BA's big low-fare
blitz in Europe; does anyone really think we'll get to see these fares?
No; they'll still be flying 737-500s, cram-packed, because we're a
captive market.

I think that, if we're to break out of the cycle of lowering pax figures
and room numbers (a key issue), we have to disincentivise the conversion
of hotels to flats. *I'm not completely clear as to how this cycle can
be broken, but it needs to be done. And urgently.

Once you get the numbers in, other parts of the economy can regenerate;
new projects can become viable as more numbers become available through
low cost access. There really is only one way to go; this business of
regression and taking Jersey back to the "good old days" is unrealistic
and irresponsible; the island spends millions each year on a good
education system; does it really want all of these young people to
leave. And, as I've said before, if it's serious about being a financial
centre, it needs to look at being linked to a major hub airport.

GBALU53,

pretty sure legsuplucy has no shares in RYR, but he/she makes a few very good points.

As an islander myself i would love to see the airport operating like it was in its heyday, but it seems that with everyday that passes we are watching the low cost ship sailing into the distance. Missed the boat? Very nearly.

It's been amazing to watch the rejuvenation of so many UK regional airports and yet in the same breath sad to see the unstoppable decline of JER. Hope that the government sees this before that ship has definatlely sailed.

Now, has LUL got shares in the JER government? That would be useful ;-)

Jersey appears not to welcome visitors and now like many of its contemporaries is over priced and offers poor service. St Helier could be any new town shopping area in the UK complete with the 'pound' shop and those dismal flats at the harbour. As said JER has missed the boat and it is reflected in a terminal that most of the time is empty?
