I'm not too sure if that will work that well what with all the competition to Germany from BHX.

Also, HLX couldn't make Luton so I personally wouldn't hold much hope for Coventry lasting, although I hope they prove me wrong!

Grrr

Coventry is owned by TUI who own Thomsonfly and Hapag Lloyd Express, Hapag are an unknown brand in most of the UK, whereas Thomson are well known. Cologne is a business route, that is why HLX stopped thier route from Luton. 3 flights per day was overkill, 4 per week could work from CVT, but not for business travel.

Nice bit of irony here. Cork is twinned with both Coventry and Cologne and both TOM and HLX are both owned by the same company overall.

Hope some Cork pax are able to take advantage of the new flights to Coventry and onwards to Cologne. Should work if the prices remain okay.

Wonder if Coventry Baginton has changed much since 1979?

On the whole CVT-ORK should do okay. The fares from ORK-BHX with RE can be quite high. After the passing of BEE on BHX-ORK it is nice to see a little competition emerging again so soon. Should keep RE on its feet! Anyone know how BEE BHX-Montpellier is doing?

Well you could say that's another former Duo route replaced, but I'm not sure how business pax would take to a sub-daily frequency. DUS is only a short hop down the autobahn / ICE line from Cologne, with a much higher frequency from BHX. FRA is also only 55 mins from Cologne by ICE. Combined with the shuttle parking at CVT, I think most business users will stay away, whereas CVT has offered a more realistic alternative for cities like Valencia, Marseille and Naples, where no direct alternatives existed from the Midlands, or even from MAN.

Buster, how long would you give this route? 6 months?

flightmapping, that would depend upon how long TUI via Hapag Lloyd are prepared to subsidise it?

Flightmapping - it also depends on whether TUI/Hapag Lloyd are prepared to spend some serious money promoting the route in the UK.

Who wants to fly to Cologne from Coventry, mind you, who wants to fly from Coventry to Cologne? 4 flights a week, so must be aimed toward the leisure market, neither destination has much short break appeal?

Cologne has a few attractions, but could they be aiming mainly at VFR? There must be 6m within the Rhine-Ruhr connurbation, and at least half that number within a 2 hour drive of CVT. Still don't know if HLX have enough marketing power to compete against Easy from EMA on this route?

Or are there some more cunning politics involved? Shove 2 fingers up to Warwick District Council and show enough confidence in the interim terminal that more than one airline is using it? Divert some of the bad press away from Thomsonfly, now they aren't the only airline operating the route? Some of those bleating nimbys still seem to think they can stop these flights from happening.

?

Given that the airport is a stone's throw away from Warwick Castle (One of Britain's top tourist attractions), Stratford & Kenilworth Castle, and that Coventry itself has a reasonably interesting tourist trail (Saint Mary's Guild Hall, Cathedral, City Walls, Spon Street, Medieval Chuches/Spires) and a couple of museums (Not to mention is well known for the Cathedral & Lady Godiva) I think it's a fairly decent "tourist" destination, especially for a weekend break - maybe longer.

Other minor "attractions" could be Leamington (Although the parade has been ruined by excessive street furniture, if you ask me) and places like Coombe Abbey, Warwickshire's manor houses, Rugby...

I'd also point the more adventurous in the direction of Coventry Canal basin and a stroll up to the Cash's Top shops (Which Sadly, lack a visitor's centre) or maybe out to Chapelfields for a "pub crawl" down the old watchmaker's district (Complete with distinctive watchmakers houses) and maybe up to Earlsdon for lunch at the "Gallery".

arbottle. TUI and Hapag need passengers, Coventry and Cologne are not Prague or Barcelona. Warwick castle is nice in the summer!

VFR (Visiting Family Relatives) did not work at Luton, but then again TUI via Hapag did not promote the route very much. Well hardly at all!

My guess is more would fly between Coventry and Cologne with thomsonFly, than will actually fly HLX?

Anyway, when will thomsonFly make a profit, if the press release is correct, they have sold 250,000 seats so far?

250,000 loss leading fares? So will thomsonfly be around in 5 years time?

Coventry Airport has announced that low cost airline Hapag-Lloyd Express will be flying from Germany starting 1/11/04
20.07.2004

Coventry Airport has today announced that low cost airline Hapag-Lloyd Express (HLX) will be flying to Cologne/ Bonn from the airport starting 1 November 2004.

Germany’s leading low cost airline will operate four return flights from the launch date with two additional flights added later. The flights will complement the winter flights schedule from Thomsonfly.com, already operating from Coventry, that was announced last week.

Managing Director of Coventry Airport, Bill Savage, said, “Since the recent start of the passenger flights from Coventry Airport we have received many enquiries and requests for German destinations to be added, largely by local businesses. As well providing new opportunities for business links with Germany’s prime economic region it is also a great destination for city breaks and holidays in the wider area.”

Cologne has Beethoven and Schubert, and Warwickshire has William Shakespeare - the new route will be popular for inbound tourism, enabling visitors to experience the history, heritage and culture of Stratford Upon Avon, Coventry and the wider region.

The route will be popular for inbound tourism to the area, coming from an area rich in history and musical heritage drawn by the attractions of the literary heritage of Stratford Upon Avon, and Coventry and Warwickshire.

Flight prices will start from only £13.99 each way, including taxes and charges and can be booked at www.hlx.com or by calling 0870 606 0519 or through your local travel agent.

Other destinations available from Coventry for the winter with Thomsonfly.com are Alicante, Amsterdam, Cork, Grenoble, Jersey, Malaga, Naples, Palma, Pisa, Valencia, Venice, Salzburg, Shannon bookable at www.thomsonfly.com or by calling 0870 1900 737.
