Midland Airways
New UK operator "Midland Airways" has taken delivery of a single former TWA B767-200ERM to launch ACMI services from Birmingham on behalf of Slovak Airlines. The aircraft was delivered to the start up carrier in mid June and is to be used on services from the midlands airport to the Indian cities of Amritsar and Ahmedabad via Bratislava. The Midland Airways aircraft replaces a B757-200 of charter operator Flyjet.

I don't understand! I thought Midland Airways was part of Poo UK who are the tour operator that chartered FJE to operate these routes.
If FJE aren't doing it, and Air Slovakia are currently doing it instead, why does it say Midland Airways will operate it on behalf of Air Slovkia? Very confusing. Surely Air Slovakia would operate it on behalf of Midland Airways no?
Do Midland Airways have an AOC application in does anyone know?

My understanding of this is that Air Slovakia will operate the aircraft on their AOC etc and that Midland Airways is just whats been painted on the side for the tour operator or whatever back here.
I've lost track of all these flights to India now anyway... wonder if anyone can help?...
PooUK started with an FJE 757..... then Air Slovakia came onboard with a 757 operating for someone else (anyone know who?)
Then another Slovakian operator turned up at BHX.... who were they operating for? Now we have the 767... is this being operated for PooUK?
I know Monarch did some work out of EMA for a tour operator I cannot remember the name of... although I heard this work will move to FJE shortly?....

DIRECT SERVICES TO THE GOLDEN TEMPLE 13 Oct 2004
Birmingham International Airport (BIA) has celebrated the launch of a new non-stop long haul charter service with specialist tour operator, Midland Airways. Travellers are now able to fly direct to Amritsar, the City of the Golden Temple, from Birmingham each Friday. This service will increase to two flights per week before the end of the month and will see a third weekly departure in early December. The flights are operated by a new airline to Birmingham, Slovak Airlines, using a 215 seater 767-200 aircraft. Although the service is operated as a charter flight, passengers have a choice of two classes – economy (203 seats) and first class (12 seats). Prices start from £299 return.
Peter Vella, Birmingham International Airport’s Business Development Director said, “There has always been a very strong demand for direct services to Amritsar from Birmingham. This new operation is bound to be a welcome addition to our existing and thriving scheduled operation to the Indian sub-continent. We wish Midland Airways every success with this new venture.”
Surinder Sandhu of Midland Airways said, “We are very excited to start this new service from Birmingham Airport. Our operation offers new opportunities for people wanting to explore Amritsar and those wishing to visit friends and family. The fact that we are flying direct, provides more choice to the Midland’s Asian community.”
Currently, the weekly service departs from Birmingham each Friday at 21:00, arriving the next morning into Amritsar Airport at 09:30. The return flight leaves Amritsar on Sunday at 13:30 and arrives into Birmingham at 20:00 the same evening. These flight times will change as new frequencies are added.
Midland Airways’ services will complement BIA’s existing long haul route network, which includes twice daily services to New York, daily departures to Dubai, frequent operations to Ashgabat, Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, Tashkent, Tehran and Abu Dhabi (from April 2005).

Air India/BMI/BA
Why dont any of the above operate direct from BHX to DEL/BOM etc there is obviously huge demand. I would imagine most people would rather travel non-stop rather than stop in the middle of no where. Are there flying restrictions UK-India?

Slovak Airlines (on behalf of Midland Airways) flies BHX-Amritsar direct with their B762.
Does Birmingham have a large enough Sikh/Hindu population to warrant direct flights to India (DEL/BOM)?

Yup, todays departure (ex BHX) was cancelled with passengers being booked on other airlines.
It is understood that Slovak Airlines no longer wish to be part of this venture & the flight was to be operated by Air Sofia (this flight has been noted on the BHX arr/deps boards as SFB303/304 recently), however, as Bulgaria isn't part of the EU, this flight would therefore have to route via a stop in Bulgaria (it currently goes direct BHX - Amritsar) which wouldn't make it viable.
Operators in Hungary & Poland (mainly White Eagle Aviation) have been mooted as possible candidates for the flight.

Not sure how White Eagle would have the necessary
experience to get involved in the operation of a 767.
The biggest they currently operate is an ATR-42 !!

Currently showing on www.bhx.co.uk/livearrs is:
1830 Amritsar WEA304
Looks like White Eagle it is then!! However, is the same B762 going to be used or will WEA source their own aircraft?
I understand Air Sofia didn't get the nod as Bulgaria isn't in the EU so rather than going direct, the flight would have to stop off in Bulgaria which would make the service less viable.

SLL303 finally departed to Amritsar late this morning using a Icandair B757-200. Not sure if this could fly BHX-Amritsar direct though?
Snowplough continues to block B767-200 OMNSH in.

I have been told that Midland Airways have now finally ceased trading.
Nothing about this on their website, and they haven't returned my call from last week.
Does anyone have more info?
