MAN June Traffic up 7.01pc
Since figures have been posted elsewhere for STN/BHX/LTN, I thought is would be good to show the Manchester figures.
I am advised that daily movements have been averaging around 730 since May.
Terminal Traffic was up 7.01pc at Manchester in June at 2,113,437.
Traffic breakdown was:
Domestic ................ 287,647 - up 11.93pc
Sched Intl............... 754,506 - up 19.71pc
Charter .................. 1,071,447 - down 1.53pc
Private/Misc ........... 837 - up 62.84pc
Rolling total for the 12 months to June 2004 was 20,490,580 which was up 8.64pc. This figure is of course distorted by the few football charters that arrived for some reason in late May of 2003 with approx 55,000 passengers.

That must still rank as the highest percentage of charter traffic out of total traffic of all the major UK airports.
Anyone any clues as to how many of the million charter passengers comes from outside of the MAN catchment area?

This, together with the second biggest ever monthly throughput of 315667 in June (up over 11% on June 2003) at Liverpool, proves that given the route and the right price the paying customer will use the airports of the north-west of England.

I accept that LPL and MAN do a fine job serving the North West and that given the proximity of one airport to the other, growth at either airport is good news for the locals. What I was trying to flesh out is what proportion of traffic comes from further afield. 1.1 million charter passengers per month is not sustainable from the North West alone, so how much is coming from Yorkshire / East Midlands / North East / Scotland. / Northern Ireland. Are these trends different for the scheduled routes, which also looks over-egged for the North West alone?

Suggest you try to get the latest CAA Survey of the airports in question or ask the airports themselves. What do you define as the airports' own catchment areas 2 hours drive?
Not sure why you think these numbers are over egged for scheduled routes - if the price is right the passengers will come.

Updated figures - including Transit pax
Overall figures for June including transit passengers were as follows:
Month's figures............ 2,169,394 + 8.5%
Yearly rolling total ......20,912,639
Movements:
Month's figures ............ 20,486 + 9.08%
Yearly rolling total .......216554 + 8.98%
The monthly figure gives a daily movement of 683. The previously quoted daily movement is taken from Mon-Fri figures - just before anybody raises the point.
In answer to the percentage of charter traffic I would suggest the answer possibly lies with a combination of factors.
Firstly Manchester has a large number of flights to most destinations. This gives a bigger choice of length of stay for the passenger when compared to other regional airports.
Secondly there is the question of which destinations are served. Again Manchester probably has the biggest range of long-haul charter flights outside of Gatwick. This has an effect on the attractiveness of an airport to the passenger.
