We've had All the NOW and Thomsonfly threads, but what about EUjet?
Will they take off from Manston as planned?

"KENT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, MANSTON
On the 26th February 2004, PlaneStation Group plc, the owner of Kent International Airport, Manston, announced that it had signed a conditional agreement with EUjet with the intent of Kent International Airport Manston becoming EUjet’s hub in the United Kingdom. We confirm that subject to the successful conclusion of negotiations with other airports and the conclusion of other arrangements, we will be in a position to announce the route network in mid April for the first flight being on 14th June 2004. Further announcements and updates on developments shall be posted here".

With such a huge catchment area, it is bound to be a success?
Fares, inc tax, charges, VAT, credit card supplements, visits to the loo, will have to be low especially for the folk south of the Thames to venture toward Manston

Yes,there is a lot of water around Manston, but also there is aprox 500,000 people within 40miles of the airport who,I'm sure will be pleased not to have to brave the M25 to have access to some services.Obviously, they won't have the huge choice of routes that Gatwick,Stansted etc can offer, but they might stand a reasonable chance of getting to the airport before their aircraft departs.I know,I've been there!

A 40 mile catchment population of 500,000 is not very high in comparison to other UK airports. Using 1991 Census data and a 60 minute drive-time I get 722,000 people for Manston, however, by way of comparison Bournemouth's is 1.4 million and Teesside is 2.2 million. You need large populations to generate sufficient travel for such operations and with Gatwick not that far away the numbers don't seem to work.

Interesting figures, although a bit out of date.Kent has ,and is planned to increase its population quite sigificantly,Ashford already earmarked for considerable expansion.I know Eurostar will be a huge player but their network is also limited.Anyway,at the end of the day,"you pay your money and take your choice"
I for one welcome the choice.

Do you mean the Channel Tunnel Rail Link Phase 2 to Stratford and St Pancras? That is due to open in 2007, there is still no confirmation that it will be used for "domestic" services. You still will need to get from Ashford to Manston.

I think thats what Serko is referring to.However, should domestic services be available on this route, then,if the airport is generating significant pax Ramsgate may be included.

Brabazon,
Nothing has been confirmed yey, but the preferred option is to have domestic services to Ramsgate as there is a teain depot there. I'm not sure if there will be a spur to the Airport. I expect they might have a shuttle bus from the railway station to the airport.

Although being a MSE local and having grave doubts about the catchment area and intent/capabilities of Wiggins the airport operators...
However I believe I am right in saying that EU Jet is a wholly owned subsiduary of Debis Airfinance (Daimler Chrysler Capital) and was set up to utilise their lease fleet particularly the unused Fokker 100's. At least then there should be some credability and stability behind this plan, unlike some of the previous contenders.

The Manston catchment area is a hell of a problem. Lots of seagulls, not many people and not a particularly affluent corner of our Kingdom. If the choice of destinations is sensible, however, there will be those who would prefer a longer drive to fighting their way through Gatwick.
If EUjet market this properly, it could work. (ie '30 minutes car to plane - now why are you using Gatwick?' or 'Park for a pound, fly for two and bypass the crowds').
The rail link, if it ever materialises, will take tens of years to plan, argue about, fund, build and open. By then, EUjet will either be a dead duck or have proved a success without a rail link.
