New Ryanair service PIK-Rome

More great news for Prestwick and Scotland as Ryanair have announced that the long awaited service to Rome will start 29th April.

The daily service details as follows:

FR7342 dep PIK 1605 arr CIA 2010
FR7343 dep CIA 2035 arr PIK 2255

Prices start at £29:99 return

I assume that they are using the capacity from the Bournemouth service reducing to once a day.

Surprise, surprise - flyglobespan.com start GLA and EDI-Rome and suddenly FR decide it's a must-serve destination from PIK

I wouldnt say so,Globespan had a PIK-CIA service last year and Ryanair didnt bother launching a route to Rome never mind Italy itself.
Ryanair were talking about this route a long time before Globespan were around.

Isn't that sector a bit long for them, must be about 3hrs block.
They have stated before that flights this long didn't fit in with their business model (uneconomic).
Must be a strategy change.

STN-Tampere (Finland) and STN-Palermo schedules are 3 hours so not really a strategy change.

I understand they have delayed start of summer schedules to April 29th at all airports. I think the Brussels situation has had to make them re-think strategy on how to keep costs down, so no doubt they are looking at where to base the B738's, timing of phasing out the B732's and perhaps disposing of the ex Buzz B733 fleet.

Interesting to see what happens

It actually pays great compliment to PIK as a base for RYR because they do have the longest sector lengths to Barcelona, Milan and now Rome.

Are they the only base outside Stansted to have service connecting to all the RYR fixed bases ?

Findo,
I think PIK is the only airport to do this on the FR network, but FR also have a base in LTN and there is not a great chance of a connection to there.

Also, does anyone know if it is a PIK or a CIA based aircraft operating this route? At the moment, the timetable would appear to show 4 a/c leaving PIK in the morning, but 5 returning at night!!

I would assume that it is a PIK based aircraft as it leaves Prestwick at 1605 to CIA then arrives back at 2255.

The link to all the major bases probably has something to do with the 737-800 maintanence base - makes sense to operate into PIK rather than postion aircraft around empty.

XSBaggage,

You cannot rely on the timetable as posted at present as it is only valid until Apr 29th, when the fully revised Summer Schedule will come into place.

If FR ever use a -800 for PIK-SNN they are going totally off their heads.

Tom,

Looks like they won't have much choice!! The -200's dont have much more of a life with FR.
