The favourite is a daily Liverpool/Cologne service.
This will take the number of weekly departures from Liverpool with easyJet this summer to a record 202 with eight based aircraft.
In order to try and stem easyJets presence in the German market it is reported that Germanwings is to fly into Gatwick twice daily from Cologne,

The new daily easyJet Liverpool/Cologne flights start 22nd June and the new daily easyJet Gatwick/Cologne flights start 27th September.
The easyJet Gatwick service explains Germanwings plans above.

Seems rather a strange route strategy from EZY that having announced on Feb 13 a major new hub for the Rhein-Ruhr at Dortmund with flights starting later in the year to Luton and 5 European points, two weeks later they announce new services from Gatwick and Liverpool, but this time to nearby Cologne, in the same geographical area. Both German airports are new destinations for EZY.
And it's a lottery for London departure points to new destinations in the latest announcements. Luton for Dortmund and Budapest, Gatwick for Cologne, Stansted for Basel and Ljubljana. Any logic behind the distribution ? Past pattern has been for Gatwick to be favoured to serve points already established from the other side of London at Luton or Stansted.

Its all Rather Cunning if you look deeply into advertising and bartering with airports.
Never ever make the mistake of thinking airline routes are anything remotely to do with where Joe Pax is and where Joe Pax would like to travel to.
Cheers

Manchester to Liverpool is less distance than that, and yet VLM fly to both cities from LCY.
Why not operate both routes if the business is there to sustain them both?

Buster,
easy don't fly to LPL-ZRH so the distance is not relevent unless of course you mean Zurich pax jumping on a bus to catch a flight from Basel to fly to L'pool. ZRH is only to LGW & LTN, and from the 28 Mar, only LTN.
