Teesside International name change

Local authority shareholders have backed plans to change the name to 'Durham Tees Valley Airport'.

What does everyone think? Will it bring more inward passengers to the Teesside area, which is what the thinking behind it is?

Sounds more like an American parent/teacher association.

Is this the latest fad? First changing the names of the major UK charter airlines, next UK airports.

Many years ago someone suggested changing Bristol Airport to Bristol and Bath Airport, not well received by the then-owners, Bristol City Council, who had risked a lot of their rate payers' money on the project.

I suppose LHR will become Blair Intercontinental.

Or Leeds Northeast! It does seem to get a fair amount of LBA flights during winter!

Ironically Teesside already effectively is. There's a plaque up in the new part of the terminal that was unveiled by Our Tony on completion of the extension works a couple of years ago.

I don't think his Sedgefield constituency even covers the airport.

Middlesborough Airport would of been more sensibile.
Why dont they rename Leeds Bradford to Leeds Airport and East Midlands to Nottingham Airport.

Brace yourself Tommy!

EMA are in the process of a rebrand/rename. You can bet Nottingham will be in the new name somewhere, but I am sure no one will be sensible enough to come up with anything are straight forward and simple as "Nottingham Intl Airport".

Time will tell.

Isn't Durham about 25 miles away from MME? I would have said that NCL is closer to Durham than MME.

Middlesbrough/Stockton Airport, or something like that, would make more sense.

While we are at simply renaming airports after their nearest city .....

Stansted can become Cambridge Airport.

Gatwick can become Brighton Airport.

Yes, it probably would. Unfortunately, about 20% of the shares are still held by various local councils, none of whom would take kindly to seeing one of their neighbours take all the credit. The solution? How about Durham-Tees Valley-Darlington-Stockton-Middlesbrough-Hartlepool-Redcar & Cleveland International.

Durham-Tees Valley has to be the stupidest name for an airport, they should of kept it as Teeside.

When Ryanair first started their DUB route back in 1997, they actually touted Teesside as 'Newcastle (Teesside)' in their timetables and route maps. It was soon changed.

I think the Newcastle South option would cause a local uproar. Rightly so... we do have our own (collective) identity and catchment area y'know.

The view that changing the name will help the airport get recognition stirs the thought in my mind that they haven't been doing their job for the past 40 years if 'Teesside' hasn't caught on yet.

The thing that rankles is that there is no real need to change the name. most people i have spoken to know where Teesside is. Also, Durham implies Durham city, which is, as has previously been stated, closer to Newcastle than Teesside. People will see that, think "Well, for an extra 10 mins in the car i can go to Newcastle and go to pretty much anywhere".
The final point is that recently Teesside played host to none other than the President of the United States. Most airports would jump at the chance to use this for as much publicity as possible, but not teesside, no almost as soon as he's gone, they want to change the name.

Aaaah, my home town, how crap are thee
