Request for BWIA info
We are hoping to fly LHR-BGI and return ANU-LHR with BWIA over Christmas. Economy class
Can anyone tell me whether the aircraft have seat back screens and also, as the return flight would be 31/12/03, and we would be "up there" at midnight, what happens about New Year?

no they dont. They have screens that come down from the overhead lockers every 6 rows or so. Take a good book!
They give extra legroom in Economy class, which makes them more bearable that BA.
We flew BWIA in OCT and we will fly them again, simply because of the extra space.

Thank you for that - although it was not the answer that I was hoping for as the children are 8 and 6 and it is difficult to keep them entertained long-haul. Any suggestions? Also do the children get any freebies? I am interested because I would like to know how much more we have to carry off than we carried on!!

Not sure if this is any help to you but I recently flew BA to BGI with my two girls aged 10 and 7.
The aircraft is 777 and all economy seats have seat back TV. They offer a good selection of channels includiing cartoon network and disney (i think).
The children were given activity packs including colouring books etc which seemed to cater for my two on an 8hr flight.
I have never flew BWIA so I cannot compare but I am sure all airlines cater for all ages.

In response to Ibis' post, the 767 goes back on Nov 30th when the Bus comes back from maintenance at Air Canada. Heard today that BW will be dry leasing a second 340 from Virgin until the second aircraft becomes availble from ILFC.

As mentioned above, BWIA only have 1 long haul aircraft, an Airbus A340.
Therefore, on the Heathrow flights they have to subcharter at least once every 3 months, when the aircraft goes in for scheduled maintenance (A-check). At the moment, and until the end of November, a LOT Polish Airlines Boeing 767 is operating all BWIA flights out of Heathrow due to the Airbus A340 being in for a C-check (scheduled maintenance on a far larger scale than an A-check).
Out of Manchester, where BWIA only operate 1 return flight a week, the flights are presently always operated by other airlines - until BWIA finally takes delivery of their new A340. At the moment, these flights tend to be operated by Air Plus Comet A310 aircraft.

Thank you everyone for the information. We have made the trip three times before, twice with BA and once with Virgin. Virgin were far superior when catering for children although the three hour outward delay for a manual check in excercise was no fun at all!
Now booked with BWIA as their price was the better than BA and Virgin were fully booked.
One final question -
Opinions please. As there are three of us, I am wondering about trying to pre-book one of the few rows of three seats at the rear of the aircraft. Good choice or bad choice?

I have just recently returned on a BWIA flight operated by LOT polish airlines on a 767-300. I would highly recommend that u get a colouring book for the children and a few books to read.
The entertainment was VERY poor for a nine hour flight we had two films (very good though) and a thirty min clip on the carribean and then a moving map for the remaining three and a half hours. One the way back we had one flim the same clip on the carribean and then the lovley moving map for the remaining five and a half hours. There are audio channels though the songs are not very good!
I wouldn't want to fly with them again, next time BA or Virgin me thinks!
