The fundamental problem is that SAA is massively overstaffed with political appointees and jobs for the boys. The politicians will not allow them to fire their brothers, cousins, friends etc who are basically dead wood.
My best guess is that SAA will go bust and then be replaced by a properly professional privately owned fresh startup without the baggage. Possibly a subsidiary of another airline such as BA or EK. BA already have Comair.

I regret to say that the brown envelope big enough to pay off all the brothers, cousins, friends, MP's, etc has not been made yet.

Neither will they permit the creation of a subsidiary of any airline in SA unless they can get all their snouts in the trough at the same time. (Fixed for MattyJ)

That is an extraordinarily racist letter which should surely be condemned by everybody!

The concept of people whose family has lived in South Africa for multiple generations not being (South) African is absurd.

Can I suggest contemplating that letter if it were written for, say, British Airways, breaking down the pilot group by race, and what the response would be?

That letter nicely sums up why S Africa as a country is in a mess. A shame with leaders like that in a country with many resources.

When I used to live and work in Africa, a coloured person (or Cape Coloureds [Kaapse Kleurling in Afrikaans] as I knew them) were mixed race persons of African, European and Asian heritage.

The term "coloured" is currently treated as a neutral description in Southern Africa, classifying people of mixed race ancestry.

Apartheid the other way around this time? That is not true progress it seems.

You are so right unfortunately. Never lived in that part of the world, so I wasn't expecting it and I was shocked to read it!
Trying to protect / secure / save your job is one thing (which is understandable), but using racist categorization for it, is pathetic to say the least.

Disgusting to read. But absolutely no surprise.

Not only their national airline going down the tubes, but in the coming decades the rest of the country is likely to go the same way, with the ultimate benefactors being the Chinese Communist Party.
